Well, sounds like you've got this all planned out to the tee don't ya? I've been self-studying Japanese for about three years now and I've been writing to several Japanese penpals. They are all very kind to me and hope that I come visit Japan some day. Permanently staying there might be a different situation, but visiting Akiba shouldn't be difficult if you learn some basic kanji to get around and know some useful phrases and things to say to get around. Going to Japan doesn't have to involve a lifetime of effort. Just do it! ...of course, easier said than done since the only thing that's holding me back right now is finances :/
