The first people to examine in this club are those whose only connections are to node 1 or 34. This means node 12 which will join node 1's club. There is also the network of nodes 5, 6, 7, 11, and 17. These nodes are cnnected to each other, but they are only connected to the other nodes through node 1. Therefore, they will all join node 1's club.
Nodes 15, 16, 19, 21, and 23 are connected only to 33 and 34. Node 33 is influenced by many other nodes. However, node 33 seems to know most of the people who are connected directly to node 34, so we can consider him a close friend of 34. Therefore, node 33 and all of the above nodes will join node 34's club.
All the other nodes in this network are connected to each other without going through nodes 1, 33, or 34, and therefore are influenced by each other's choices in deciding which club to join. In a simple computer program this would be a stalemate--- there are no other nodes with a majority of edges to already decided nodes. If people make intelligent decisions, though, many solutions can be created. For example, if node 30 joins node 34's club, she will sway both of his friends to do so as well, and avoid breaking up any friendships. So, nodes 24, 27, and 30 will join node 34's club.
Now we must get into tough decisions, because we are assuming that a highly influential person like node 3, with connections to 1, 33 and 34 among others, will not just decide on a whim which group to join, but make up his mind after his friends have chosen. Therefore, let's look at nodes with fewer edges. Node 28 has 4 edges, and 2 are to the decided nodes 24 and 34. So, the most friends he could lose is 2. Since his other friends are undecided, but some share connections to other nodes with edges to 24 and 34, he can aim to sway them by joining 34's club. Now look at node 26. He has 3 friends, 1 (#24) is in 34's club, and now he can sway another (#25) to join 34's club by joining it himself, thus keeping a majority of his friends. So, 25 and 26 both join 34's club. Now node 29 can sway 32 to join 34's club and keep all of its friends, so 29 and 32 join 34's club. Node 31 can do the same thing by swaying node 9, so they both join 1's club. Then 31 also joins. 10 might join 34 on account of his direct connection and the fact that he has only two friends, so the connection to node 3, no matter what they chose, would probably be weaker.
As for node 1's club, various nodes must cooperate to keep their friendships. Nodes 13, 18, and 22 have little incentive to do anything on their own---they cannot convince anyone by themselves---but if they work together with other nodes they can keep all of their friends. Let's say they decide on the most logical thing, which is to gang up on 4 and ask her to collaborate in order to bring them all happiness, perhaps giving her a bribe. If 4, 13, 18, and 22 all join 1's club, then 8 will see the light and realize he can sway 2 into joining and keep the majority of both their friends, so 8 and 2 will join as well. This will give 14 and 20 a majority on 1's side so they will join.
Now, looking at node 3's friends, nodes 9, 10, 29, 32, and 33 are on 34's side, and 1, 2, 4, 8, and 14 are on 1's side. 3 can join whichever club she wants. Either way, this model breaks up only 10 friendships.
