We all know that lately game companies are running out of/too lazy to come up with original ideas for games and have been chugging remakes and sequels.
I say they should remake Super Smash TV
>>114
They remade the first one on the Wonderswan. I think they're also doing a remake for the DS.
that how we can brag to our grandson how good the game was
Actually square is planning of a prequel to FFVII for psp. I am not sure about the name or if it is already out.
One thing is sure, we all dreamed of fighting along with Sephiroth. Now we can!
it's called Crisis Core, I think it's out in Japan, but not the US. And you don't get Sephiroth, you play as the Turks -- Reno and Rude.
I think FF7 as well as a lot of other games got more credit than they deserve because they were 3D. FF7 wasn't all that. After you leave Midgar, 80% of the quests were "Hey dumbass, Sephiroth went thataway!" "ZOMG We have to get Sephiroth". That isn't a mindblowing story. Shinra and the Turks were much more interesting, but they were dropped for the most part after the first 5 hours.
The cast of characters were pretty bad.
I don't see what everybody likes Aeris for. She's one of those sickeningly sweet characters that have no thoughts of their own. She existed to be cute, and if Sephy hadn't killed her, I think I'd have wanted to. Josef (FF2j), Tellah (FF4), and General Leo (FF6) were better. They had actual thoughts and opinions, they had a reason for being around.
Barret came off like a Stormfag's wetdream -- a jive-talking dumbass negro stereotype with questionable parenting skills (Hey 4-year old Marlene, watch my bar. I'll be back... someday), poor self-control, and a gun welded to his arm. Way to go Square.
Tifa had no personality, and neither did Cloud. They had a nice little acid trip backstory, but even then, Cloud just never seems to have a personality. He doesn't seem too upset to find out his life is a lie. He's pretty matter-of-fact even after his supposed girlfriend is stabbed through the heart.
I never said that you play Sephiroth, I heard that you fight along with Sephiroth as Zack. But anyway a friend told me that, so I guess you know better.
As for all the rest. I kind of agree with you but I also think that you have a prejudice for FF7. Yes FF7 was one of the first "3D" and it also had those FMV videos (I am not sure about the name) I also think that FF7 became so popular because it was one of the first rpgs all those people ever played. Usually the first thing you play you get attached to it. Furthermore, FF7 may not had the most interesting cast of characters but it definately had fun gameplay because of the awesome materia system and the battles, which also was so different of the repetitive class system the previous had. Anyway FF7 was great and there is no doubt about it.
>>118 I felt that it was popular because the main character an angsty teenager identifying with the 13 yr old fanboys
> 3D allowed Square to tell that story in a way that couldn't be done on the SNES.
It wasn't actually in 3D (besides the over world), that's was just marketing. The backgrounds were all low-res pictures.
There is nothing that couldn't have been done just as well on the SNES, besides FMV. Why was it on the PS? Exclusivity.
>>113
> Heh, a few hours of Square's FMV would be fantastic
What was FF: Spirits Within? Besides a financial failure.
>>118
> 80% of the quests were "Hey dumbass, Sephiroth went thataway!"
That linear goose chase is what bothered me the most. So dull, but at least it ended before the game did.
>>119
> awesome materia system
I hated it and it pushed me over the edge in my opinion of the game. I'd rather build a character's strengths, not a green orb's.
> I also think that FF7 became so popular because it was one of the first rpgs all those people ever played.
I got attached to FFVI, myself. Those before loved themselves some FFIV, for reasons I can't explain.
>>120
True. You forgot the part about the bartender with the huge, polygonal tits, though.
>Why was it on the PS? Exclusivity.
like what you said, marketing.
and the game pretty much cramp up forcefully into 3cds, even the music have to be midi, dun think anyone would want to buy 5 cds just for more '3D' in those time
>>122
Of course I knew that most of the game had rendered backgrounds. But you could also move across a z-axis in those environment. The SNES had it's sprite scaling and all, but if they tried that with FF7, and their dynamic angles and areas, it would've looked awful.
You actually missed the point of my "A few hours of FMV would be fantastic" bit. >>112 had suggested that the games consisted of several hours of FMV, when there's really only a little bit. I was merely suggesting that'd be nice if that were the case. But since you brought up Spirits Within, I will say that I thought it was an awful movie, but damn it looked gorgeous. Seriously, Square's CGI team rivals Pixar in terms of technical prowess, and that movie proved it.
True, but I think the FMVs miss the point entirely. I'm playing a game, not watching a movie. And the sad thing about SE's FMV team is that it takes away from other aspects of the game.
FF10 was pretty much a movie. A decent movie, but the gameplay was dumbed down to the point where you walked down straight line roads and mashed X. If you took away all the "shiney things" in FF10, it would be a shit game. No real challenge, it's practically impossible to explore or get lost. If FFX had been released as a 32-bit SNES title, SE would have failed.
Games should not be turned into movies. A good story is important, but remember that the player is buying a game to play not watch. I want to explore a huge cave, slay a few dragons. I want to feel like I'm the hero. I don't want to set my controller down for hours while I watch a movie.
MASTER OF MAGIC!
Oh hohhohohohohohohohohohoho!
>>125
Alright, for the record, What I was saying was that the FF games, while they have their fare share of cutscenes, had very small amounts FMV in it. In fact, having just completed FFX, I can't think of any scene where I wasn't playing anything for more than 5 minutes that didn't involve the ending.
I'll agree that FFX was a little too easy though. The team switching mid battle didn't have a lot of opportunities to be really taken advantage of in the main game, though the sidequests kept it interesting.
Honestly though, there's very few games these days that wouldn't be a "shit game" without it's shiny bits.
Colonization's another safe bet.
>>129
agree with that mate
and also SPACE QUEST !!!
They need to remake Catlevania Curse of Darkness downgraded to 2D.
Skate or Die from NES
NiGHTS: Into Dreams.
There is a Space Quest "remake" for Windows xp (works on my Vista Ultimate 64bit) All the original Space Quest games. Bought it for 100kr (norwegian kroner)It's about 18USD. Same with Police Quest and Kings Quest. On the other hand, i think the old 2D adventure games should be left alone. I would hate it if they would remake any of it with shitty 3D-engines and lousy gameplay. Is it THAT hard to be creative, and make creative games?
Front Mission 3
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
>>139
Oh god please no, not another 2D to 3D assrape in the series.
Axelay and Einhander should have a remake. If not that, then at least a shooter with a similiar play style to either. Weapon switching, screen scrolling in other directions besides "forward".
Also, there should be a graphically updated Monster Party. Though, with how censorship in some countries are nowadays, it would be toned down or otherwise banned.
>>136
They're working on a "sequel" for the Wii.
Pokémon Snap sequel
FINAL FANTASY VIII
Yes, maybe they can remake FF VIII into something good.
>>145
Fuck no, I don't want squeenix raping another part of my childhood all over again.
Task Force 1942 and Great Naval Battles anyone?
So I listened to the title song of the 3rd album of the Black Mages, "Darkness and Starlight", which is the opera of FF6 with actual opera singers doing the opera thing with a metal accompaniment, as usual for the band. Ridiculous but awesome.
I made me think that I hope they never, ever do a modern remake of FF6.
FF7? Sure, you can assrape it repeatedly, the harm is done now, nothing can undo it.
But now that most of the people who mattered have left the FF teams, keep your filthy hands out of this one, Squeenix.
FF without Amano
=
FAIL
the new guy
is almost as bad as Falcoon is for SNK
ITT: Tons of screaming FF fans that will never get their way.
I'm an FF fan, and I want a remake of Final Fight 1, 2 and 3.
Well played but they already remade Final Fight 1.
Sounds like they failed at making it final too.
raises hand I want Final Fantasy VII to be remade!
It's painfully obvious it's in the works.
I'm sure it will be full of new characters and KH cross-overs and there will be a special ending where Aeris and Zack are resurrected. And most characters will also get additional zippers in their clothes.
Then there will be a FF7-2 where Cloud starts an emo band and must compete with a visual-key band made of Sephiroth clones. It will be awesome.
Oregon Trail!!
Also, Battletoads.
Killer Instinct, or if possible a sequel.
>> 159
actually, I'd pay to see that FF7-2. Kinda reminds me of that one reboot episode where it was Enzo's birthday, and Megabyte showed up...
Deus EX, I know they did it for the PS2, but lets face it, it sucked ass as a squeal. Better graphics and voice acting!
Erm, there was a sequel of that on PC anyway.
>Comix Zone for Genesis
I would love to see that. I would also love to see Cosmic Smash get a remake.
I'd love to see Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask remade. I never owned those games and I tried it out recently, and the graphics made the game wierd (can't really explain it any better).
Oh! I'd also like to see Mother 1 + 2 either on the Virtual Console or remade entirely along with a localized Mother 3.
Mother
Kirby Super Star. Needs updated (not necessarily 3D) graphics and online mode so you/your friends can play as a helper. I haven't had more fun in a single Kirby game between Revenge of Metaknight, Great Cave Offensive, and Milky Way Wishes. Actually, I did have more fun, when I played through the game again with a friend over ZSNES's netplay.
As for the people who are going on about a Chrono Trigger update/remake, how about asking for another sequel instead! I liked Chrono Cross almost as much as Chrono Trigger, I can only imagine how awesome Chrono-style time travelling/parallel universes/what-have-you would be with current-gen graphics.
I mean, as long as Tetsuya Nomura wasn't involved or at least discreet about character design and avoiding over-the-topness. I liked FF8 and then every other game he's chara designed for since has just been FF8 character parodies.
Pokemon Snap for the wii or ds.
N64 games should be remade for ds. kind of like Super Mario 64 DS
A new Quake or Doom game!
oh wait..
FFVII
>>168 NO.
>>173 clearly thinks Mother is already perfect. They are wrong.
Terranigma
FFVIII
>>175
I only agree with Terranigma
there's too many "remakes" (read - cashgrabs) of the final fantasy games already, do you people want MORE of them??
(although, sadly, i admit that I am ONCE AGAIN going to buy FFIV, this time for the DS - let's see, so i have FFII for SNES, one copy from FFIV+chrono, Final Fantasy IV advance, and now FFIV DS)
christ. thankfully that's the only one i whored out on, cuz it was so awesome.
worms
Duke Nukem. I heard rumors of a remake or sequel to it but No one thinks it will really come out.
System shock 1 + 2, Thief 1 + 2.
>>178
they have been talking about a new one for years, but they are going to release a pack of the last three
also i want to see total annihilation 2 or something like it supreme commander was kind of fun but did not seem like much of a strategy game compared to TA
Pocky and Rocky
zombie ate my neighbours
Golgo-13 done MGS style...you know you would play it
Getsufuu Maden
Faceball 2000
Secret of Evermore
river city fucking ransom
the gba one doesnt count because it has no co-op mode
I vote that they remake the idea of having original innovative games that also have good story telling and artistic merit. You know, instead of mediocre rehashings of old games.
But that's just me. Apparently.
yep, just you.
j/k, i tend to agree. I can see from their standpoint, though, that new games these days cost a metric f-ton of money to make, and they probably won't even get it back with the massive graphics expectations as they are. Basically, we want them to make a lord of the rings trilogy on the budget of a Uwe Boll film. So, they do the next best thing and dally about our nostalgia factor (not to mention re-introduce their tried and true franchises to the new gamers).
at least, that's how I see it.
>>186
still a remake but maybe with a better story and gameplay??
for a remake, Totalwar's shogun would be awesome.. this game kicks ass, with a remake, it will kick ass so hard, its foot will rip through the pants and right into the hole!
i would say FF9 needs....no, deserves and PS2/3 Remake XD not very old but still a good PSX game i would like with sicker graphics
umihara kawase needs a wii version
There should be a decent Doom remake. While I'm a aware that Doom 3 was essentially a remake, well, it's essence was anything but lost.
games like Serious Sam, Will Rock and Painkiller have tried (Painkiller being the closest and better of the bunch), but it would be fantastic to have all the creeps we saw in Doom like they were in Doom: Dumb, by the millions and weak, so we can pwn their asses. Just that this time, in glorious parallax-mapped 3D.
But that's a minor wish. I guess in the current times, that kind of gameplay wouldn't succeed.
So, i'm gonna stick with a remake of either the System Shock series, Deus Ex series or Quake 1.
A Quake remake has all the potential to be REAL creepy ^^
MOTHER!
FINAL FANTASY VII
>>195 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AND NO NO NO. It can never catch the magic of the old games and will only make it more retarded (look at advent children or better yet twin snakes..YUCK!)
(Read the rules: no FFVII REMAKE!)
How can you say it has magic, then call it retarded in the same sentence? If you want to make a point, at least have 2% the understanding of a normal person would normally have when speaking. Another reason you appear stupid is because if you want to say "no" multiple times, at least put an odd number of them, because an even number of "no"s equates out to a "yes."
Besides, from their point of view, making remakes gets them cash. I would be willing to spend cash on the remake, hell I would buy it for $200. There are many fans like me, so for them the only problem would be the time it takes to actually remake such an amazing game.
And, just let people say what they want. If you want to do so, don't put "moderator" on there, because a real moderator would not do so, nor would they hide behind the label of "heaven"
altogether, you disgust me.
>>197fail
No,no no no no= means no in an emotional state
It can never catch the magic /and/(if remake possible) =more retarded (evidence:twin snakes/advent children=horribe sequels/remakes)
Pretty clear, you misread buddy. I'm not the Poster
And i agree, no to FFVII remake
I am master troll.
Childlike words fill you with rage.
Keystrokes of fury.
Internet's Defense.
Powers through the filth, only to
Find nothing to save
Advent Children wasn't THAT bad. I'm not so sure about Twin Snakes, though.
I really like FF7 Advent Children. It gave people exactly what they wanted - what's to complain about?
ff6 would be good :)
maybe, but unless they were going to jack it up to the level of Final Fantasy IV DS, I think I would prefer they leave it as it was on the SNES. It has a certain character there that would not be easily transferred.
I want FF7 Remake too!!! GYAAA! I want to see Aerith in Human-Mode, not Polygon-Mode! ARRRRRRGGGHHH!!!
I hate FFVII so much it hurts reading fanboys drooling over an hypothetical remake.
what did you not like about FFVII?
I agree, There has been a lot of DS remakes of the classic Final Fantasy games for the DS, and FFVI was probably the best Final Fantasy of all time, I'm definately looking forward to seeing how that turns out. But I do hope they retain those moments from the original that were omitted or changed in the GBA version. :)
>>210 what did they change for the GBA version?
They didn't actually change anything that affects gameplay. But I heard there were a few scenes which were edited, I guess to make it more appropriate. When you first see the character Shadow, there was a quote that went something like "He'd slit his own mother's throat for a nickel." This was removed in the GBA version, but I think it was a great line and should have been left in.
>>209
I just didn't like it. I thought it was "meh". This comes from someone who LOVED the VI. And seeing people blabbering about FFVII all day long when it was, well, "mostly okay", made me hate it. Also OLOL FFVII IS THE FIRST FF BECUZ THE PLAYSTATION IS THE FIRST CONSOLE EVER AMIRITE? Fucking all great-public-marketing and console starting to mix with computer games (not in the right way) started at that time.
FFVII had the materia system for it, and that's about it. It wasn't that great. Get over it. FFVIII, however cliche'd and short it was, had better writing and a more interesting universe.
You're right that FFVII is kind of over-hyped. Despite that it was a good game. It had a really engaging story, great characters, and of course the gameplay and graphics was revolutionary. Credit where it is deserved, y'know?
FFVIII was good, and original (first time to ever try portray photo-realistic humans in a RPG, I believe), but for whatever reason, albeit the confusing plot or the junction system, it just wasn't popular, and only in recent years have people come to realise what a great game it was.
And, I see what your getting at with that little "FFVII IS THE FIRST FF BUCUZ..." thing, but for alot of people it was the first game, Europe didn't get any FF games until VII came along, because Square just didn't see it as being profitable to release those earlier RPGs.
