Izuna: Legend of the Unemployed Ninja (23)

So this game has a 66 average on metacritic, and it irritates me. I mean, it's not a superb game or anything, but reviewers are hating on it for the stupidest reasons.

"Too fucking difficult" - Cry moar. Odds are you die because:

  1. You regularly charge into hordes of monsters like a stupid fuck instead of luring them individually into corridors.
  2. You don't sit still and recover HP back to full after a tense battle.
  3. You're incapable of strategic retreat. Trying to land that killing blow with 50 HP left does not pay off. And guess what: with most monsters, you can just back up, run around (carefully) and recover HP while they follow behind you like a harmless, obedient puppy.
  4. You don't carry any escape items whatsoever. Personally I don't go past B5F without a Kikan, a Panacea and three Ten'is.

"Repetitive, boring, lacks depth" - It's a possibility. However I'm guessing the reviewers who wrote this never figured out how to upgrade equipment with talismans, let alone Tsukumo and weapon spirits. I don't see how most console RPGs are any deeper, apart from having a more detailed story.

"You lose everything when you die" - O rly? Should have used the storehouse. Plus with a crappy un-upgraded kit (still sufficient to beat the game) you can get a comparable set of equipment back in 10-20 minutes. With a non-crappy kit you should have stuck a Kikan on everything you cared about.

I read a review of it that compared it favourably to a roguelike, but I don't see how a commercial game can really approach the sheer breadth of stuff available in one of the free roguelikes like Nethack, that have been built up over many years. Unless the story portions are as entertaining and offbeat as say, Disgaea or Swordcraft Story, which would provide a nice counterbalance.

LESBIAN NINJAS.

Atlus is really starting to get desperate.

You mean they weren't desperate when they got that white-haired chick in Second Opinion?

Izuna definitely doesn't compare, but there's something to be said for well-executed simplicity (otherwise who would waste time on Nethack when they could be trying to wrap their heads around ToME?) And as I observed, most other console RPGs I've tarried with have an even poorer breadth of gameplay, instead relying on their storylines to generate and keep the player's interest. It's fairly rare to see any equipment upgrade options at all, AFAIK.

Hey, it worked. Apparently, despite the mediocre reviews, this game is sold out everywhere. Of course, perhaps that's because Atlus printed about ten copies of it as is standard procedure with their games.

The most ridiculously complicated roguelike I've had the pleasure of playing. I prefer other *bands, myself.

I rather like the game; It's not hard, if you actually understand how the game plays.. If you rush in & try to take on tons of monsters, or run around, tripping traps, etc.., then, yes, you're going to die.. Technically, it's still not too hard anyway, as you keep all the xp you earn & levels you gain, if you die, so the only penalty is losing eq. & gold..

As far as a Fushigi no Dungeon game goes, I really can't complain about it. Compared to what else is available on the DS for Fushigi no, I still probably prefer Pokemon Mystery Dungeon more. That being said, it's an interesting take, but almost certainly not up to the level of quality that we're used to from Atlus.

That is daunting. I can barely stay alive in the first several levels of Nethack.

If anyone is interested in roguelikes, coincidentally enough a magazine dedicated to them started just this week. http://magazine.roguelike.us/rtm_issue1_20070320.html

I want Atlus to release a Shin Megami Tensei game on DS in the style of the classic SNES versions. And in English plox.

Maybe it can have lesbian ninjas in it. Combine two good ideas into one.

As far as I know, ALL of my roommates and former roommates play games like this. I am the only one that plays any game by hiding behind corners, backtracking, luring out enemies, sniping and so-on, rather than charging like a ninny.

I asked them once why they do this, and they told me that games a are no fun to play any other way. WTF?

When they reach an enemy they can't beat, do they just keep charging in over and over?

YES. For the love of God, it pisses me off.

And none of these games, FPS even time your progress. One of those roommate's is actually a Namco playtester now, I think.

>>19 i didn't play izuna 2, but it looked like all they really gave you was being able to play as different characters? It looked like they were just lengthening the experience by giving you more characters to try to level...
