Besides the obvious Squaresoft games... just started playing Wizardy V and Paladin's Quest. Recommend me something less technical than Wizardy V please :3

Tales of Symphonia, FTW.

I enjoyed Shin Megami Tensei quite a bit. Even more so after Gideon Zhi translated it. For those not in the know, it's an RPG taking place in a post apocolyptic world overrun with demons. The art is pretty interesting with some cyber punk influences, and people who enjoy religous lore and mythical creatures would like it.

kingdom hearts? gameplay was real good despite the button bashing.
final fantasy7? erm... my first rpg... /o/
shin megami tensei, persona3? must admit, it a darn good game i have play recently, although it draggy in some part

Isn't the op asking for games from SNES?

Anyway, give Secret of Mana I and II a try.
Even though they're the obvious Squaresoft games most of ppl just forget about these, specially SoM II

>>Zelda games don't even allow choice, and Link is almost devoid of character. It would be most accurate to refer to the series as "Adventure" games.

I completely disagree. If you say that they don't allow choice then you obviously haven't played zelda games enough. There are many times in the game where you have to choose.

I agree that Link's character is kinda devoid. But that's because nintendo never reveals much about his character and anyway thats the way those series are like. But you can't say it's not an rpg because it's doesn't follow the classic D&D stuff. Don't forget Zelda is an asian game and such games don't follow the D&D rules like character development and stuff.

I don't think Zelda is purely and adventure or purely and rpg or purely an action/RPG. That's why I said it is unique. It's Zelda, fullstop. Personally I believe it is a RPG with action elements.

>>12 Kingdom hearts in SNES O.o?

>>10 Tales of Phantasia is the actual title. Symphonia is for GameCube. And yes it rocks

Hmm guys we talk about SNES here

> you can't say it's not an rpg because it's doesn't follow the classic D&D stuff

Then I can't really say it's not a FPS, either.

> an asian game and such games don't follow the D&D rules like character development and stuff.

Like Final Fantasy?

> is unique

Yep, Cloud's character is kinda devoid too.

I'm still here. People don't have power buttons.

> I won't keep answering you because you are not answering seriously

That's as serious as it gets, perhaps just more honest then maybe you usually hear.
If you want to name your dog "Cat", go right ahead.
(I hope I'm not wasting my time by assuming you already understand analogies.)

>>Then I can't really say it's not a FPS, either.

I understand analogies but I also understand that when you make one it must have a meaning. No one can say that Zelda is an FPS.
That's why I thought you were not answering seriously

> No one can say that Zelda is an FPS.

Congrats, you've found the meaning.

RPG: Role Playing Game
FPS: First Person Shooter

You see now that Zelda is technically neither of these. The definition of both more easily fits the Grand Theft Auto series. To be a grammarian douchebag, very few electronic games fit the mold, considering how the player plays it is more important than the content in defining an RPG.
Adventure is a word that fits perfectly the scope of Zelda Games.

Well I won't argue anymore with you. We have different opinions and we will never find a solution. You think it's action? ok keep it. It's Zelda to me. Yep unique rpg.

Soul Blazer - I liked the goats.

It would have to be Chrono Trigger for me, if Zelda doesn't count as an RPG. Seiken Densetsu 3 is also great. I wish to play Secret of Mana and Star Ocean!!

33 Name: Crawd : 2008-09-03 02:46 ID:X/L1ZYKI

Yeah, im gonna have to go with Star Ocean. Mainly because:

  1. Multiple Endings
  2. Choice of characters that join your party
  3. Ratix
  4. General Amazing-ness
  5. Lack of crystal-based plot(thats right, its a shot at FF)

34 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-09-03 15:28 ID:Yw713rpf

mine would be the twisted tales of spike mcfang.

it's another action rpg, but you really do go up levels. with every level your offense doubles and so does your defense. you'd think it would make the game too easy, but it really doesn't, no matter how much levelling i do, the first boss is always a killer for me...

and damn I just love that soundtrack!

35 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-09-03 17:52 ID:Ewh5m4CT

Illusion of Time (aka Illusion of Gaia) is way overlooked. Although I wouldn't say it was the best, it was good.

And then there's a Square one, Rudra no Hihou, which never was translated and featured an awesome word-based magic system, parallel storylines, and great graphics. A translation team has hacked into it a few years ago though, and now you can play it in english.

Oh, and I think I'll second Tales of Symphonia which is pure awesomeness with gorgeous graphics and superb soundtrack for the best non-square Snes RPG.

36 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-09-05 14:43 ID:Yw713rpf

it's tales of Phantasia dammit.

but i'll check out that "Rudra no Hihou" you made it sound neat.

i just wish the slayers translation was going as well...

My bad. A friend of mine just talked to me about the other one, hence the confusion. But I'm ashamed and going to smash a brick on my head over and over again until I fall uncounscious.

Shin Megami Tensei. I love music of this game

being so used to the censor happy days of nintendo, I highly enjoyed the creepiness factor of this game. it just had a feel that told you "things are not right" and the music (and sometimes LACK of music) was the #1 reason for that feeling.

nintendo doesnt like to flesh out their characters much because they want you to become the character, and imagine its your adventure.

Should I be concerned that I often find myself in the shoes of a mustachioed blumber with an ambiguous lovelife?

43 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-10-27 02:39 ID:ZVMJKfMq

Hmmm, well I'll assume that by "no obvious Square" that FF, CT and Secret of Mana are out. Not that they would necessarily break the top 5 anyway.

My other top 5, in no particular order:

Ogre Battle
Breath of Fire
Lufia
Wizardry (jap)
Star Ocean

44 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-10-27 14:55 ID:iYVjhuH7

Star Ocean is (jap) as well, mister.

45 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-10-28 04:54 ID:LfE44NLz

I liked Romancing SaGa 3, even though it was a bit confusing.

I had thought Japanese RPG is not accepted in foreign countries.
You have a sharp sense to choose RS3.that is masterpiece of snes.
But unofficial translation ver has some strange words I think.
Or simply I might not understand a detailed slang in that.

Mario RPG is kinda fun, but DAMN is it easy. I wonder if anyone made a hardmode hack of it yet.

51 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-12-12 05:15 ID:RBryuhQH

I can't play my $80 copy of supermario RPG b.c i had recently (accidentally) blew my load into my SNES. NOw the shit can't read ANY gametapes. Google returns no resluts, I figured this would have been a common problem. Help me out. Don't Troll.

52 Name: Anonymous Gamer : 2008-12-12 14:53 ID:pI15a4Px

... I know this is a troll, but for the LULZ I will help you. First off, how in the nine hells of Shabranigdo did you blow your load into your SNES!? I mean, c'mon, it's all yellowed by now - not hawt.

But if you want to clean it out, you'll need some windex, and an old tooth brush. Take it apart, so that you have easy access to the card reader, and the lightly brush it out with your toothbrus that has been dipped in the windex.

also, gametapes -> cartridges.
