1 Name: Anonymous Linguist : 2006-12-13 12:04 ID:KzGPYGKS

i'm not a english speaker, but i always feel strange when everybody write
'Fxxx' or 'PHACK' or like that. Why ? Everybody knows that hidden word
means 'FUCK', but why transform the word ? Just for fun ?

"US obscenity laws were originally meant to prohibit attacks on religion and religious figures or to protect children from profane speech. Since the time of the Civil War in the late 1800s, restrictions have focused more on sexual speech. There has always been great difficulty in defining profanity. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission, in response to complaints about a 1973 broadcast comedy routine by George Carlin, called: Seven Words You Can Never Say On Television, ruled that such language could not be broadcast at times of day when there is a reasonable risk that children may be in the audience."

A lot of boards censor "fuck" so a fuck-user has to disguise it to by-pass the filter.

I think "fuck" is a beautiful French word from the old "fuccant" and I use it all the time.

Such a fucking rediculous law. They're not protecting kids from something damaging, like gore, but instead, they're too pussy to admit that kids swear young.

The reason is because it's considered profanity (eg: fuck you, a very offensive way of saying you suck), and it is also a word meaning "to have sex" (eg: I want to fuck.)

17 Name: Anonymous Linguist : 2007-08-18 17:54 ID:04n8lLoA

>>14
That's actually quite a clever response. XD It still makes the censorship of >>13's country ridiculous, but at least there's some fragment of logic in your argument.

Maybe they think kids won't be able to pronounce it if they can't tell the way people are using their mouths?

Anyway, some US censors don't even do it right. When people say asshole, we get "ass----" instead of "---hole". When you censor the ass part, we at least won't be able to tell which curse EXACTLY that they're saying (my reasoning being that I've heard "dickhole", "fuckhole", "shithole", and "dillhole" at some points in my life).

18 Name: Anonymous Linguist : 2007-08-28 17:43 ID:Heaven

In many of the Japanese rock groups, the word "fuck" is used all the time. I often see people shouting it from the stage. Do many Japanese people know the word? Is it considered trendy to use there? In America, it is something of a "shock word". Many people think it is vulgar, so sometimes people use it to show how strongly they mean something. I guess it's a little like "zaken'na yo" (sp?)

Also,

During the period of time that the Normans had control of the British Isles, the Normans, having established themselves as the ruling class, treated many customs of the Saxons as being inferior.

A French-speaking Norman king deemed French superior to the Anglo-Saxon language that existed at that time. In fact, many of the common words and phrases of the old language were deemed to be offensive just because they were common words among the Saxons at that time.

The use of those terms was actually banned.

Instead of them, he had people use the Norman terms and phrases.

The word "fuck" is an old Anglo-Saxon word that means, basically, "to enter", or "penetrate", and was used, very much as it is now-a-days, as a term for sex. The term that the Normans replaced "fuck" with was "fornicate", which is, to this day, considered a more appropriate term.

Some of the old Saxon words, like fuck, shit, piss, etc, managed to survive, and eventually entered into the English language.

There was a great deal of extreme religiosity and superstition at that time, and for some time afterwords.

And since old habits die hard, one can assume that the various Christian church officials, ignorant of the actual meaning, and/or origin of these words, and the purpose behind their having ever been deemed offensive (or maybe, and this is a wild guess here, they were even seeking to get in good with the Normans, or perhaps even taking orders from the Normans!), continued the trend of viewing these words as being offensive.

They probably told the superstitious populous that the words were an offense to God, or something.

Who knows.

Anyway, that's basically why "fuck" is a "bad word".

Strange how culture works, isn't it?

34 Name: 33 : 2008-10-23 21:48 ID:Heaven

I was wrong, the word "fuck" is actually derived from an Old English term, "fokken", which means "to beat against".

And iirc this word originates in germanic languages.

But all this fuss doesn't explain why people choose to write it and censor themselves, instead of simply not using it. I really don't get that. It's the intent that counts after all, isn't it?

Eikä me tarvittu mitää sen jälkee <--- 'tis ain't rite
Emmekä me tarvinneet mitään sen jälkeen <-- this is right

And we did not need anything afterwards.

Ravittu [been fed]
Ravinto [food, in general]

Although both words have 'ra' in them, it in self doesn't mean anything, except for the Egyptian god Ra, but nevermind that. Finnish words or names usually consist on single entities just like English does: truck, firetruck. In Finnish truck would be rekka, but a firetruck would be paloauto. Paloauto consists of two words, palo [meaning as an uncontrolled fire - metsäpalo, forrest fire] and auto [car]. Logically firetruck would be palorekka, but that's not a 'real' Finnish word.

One huge problem non-Finnish speakers might cross is that there are many words that mean the same thing, but only when used in the right context. So when one wishes to translate "I am happy" it could be put like this "Olen onnellinen" as in 'I am happy for you two' 'Olen onnellinen teidän kahden puolestanne'. But it could also be put in this way 'Olen iloinen' which would be more like 'I am happy it's sunny'. Even though iloinen and onnellinen both mean happy, they are [likely] used in different situations to describe slightly different feelings.

I've propably explained this in another thread, but the second big problem for foreigners are the many suffixes. Observe:

Minä [I or me]
Minun [mine]
Minulle [to me]
Minulta [from me]
Minuun [into me]
Minusta [out of me - also used in 'I think that.., I feel that..'] Minusta tuntuu..

Kissa [cat]
Kissan [cat's]
Kissalle [for the cat]
Kissalta [from the cat]
Kissaan [into cat]
Kissasta [out of cat, look above], Kissasta tuntuu..

I, me, my, mine
Minä, minä, minun, minun

Internet is an awesome thing
Internet on mahtava juttu

One noticable point is that in Finnish there are no 'a, an or the'. As we all know, when spoken of some particular object, ie. an apple, we use 'an' and when we are talking about a certain apple, we use 'the'. In Finnish there's just apple 'omena'.
Should we buy apples?
Pitäisikö meidän ostaa omenoita?
That is an apple.
Tuo on omena.
The apple is red.
Omena on punainen.

And finally, Finnish has a straight line of thought, meaning that unlike in German, we say things in a 'straight way'.
In German they'd say
"To be seaten the comfy chair in you will." ~ or something like that
But in this glorious language of cursing, it's said
"You will be seaten into a comfy chair."
"Sinut istutetaan pehmeään tuoliin."

Because it's actually considered to be an offensive word. Many non-natives use it because they think it's a "regular" swear word, something mild, something that shows just how strongly you feel about something. But to a native, "fuck" is (much) more rude. It's not a mild swear word at all. Just like "shut up" packs much more of an offensive punch to a native than to a non-native, who often think that it's a mildly rude way of saying "be quiet".
