Fairy Tail (37)

Has anyone read this manga yet? It's by Hiro Mashima, and some people on One Piece forums have been commenting on how the art style and a couple of the characters' personalities are reminiscent of One Piece.

Personally, I don't think it's that much of a One Piece ripoff. The premise is different enough...

IIRC, he did work as an assistant on One Piece for a time. The influence in style is quite apparent. So it's not about pirates searching for treasure?

Wow, one uninspired and derivative shounen manga looks a bit like another uninspired and derivative shounen manga. I am shocked beyond belief.

I agree.

Yeah, this would totally have to be one of the assistants of the One Piece mangaka. The style is just too similar.

It's funny because both the Naruto mangaka and the creator of One Piece were both assistance of the Kenshin mangaka originally. It's too bad their work totally took off much more than Kenshin did in comparison.

actually, it seems that hiro mashima has nothing to do with eiichiro oda....

And if i'm not mistaken, it was actually Hiroyuki Takei (Shaman King's mangaka)who worked under Nobuhiro Watsuki along with Eiichiro Oda, not Kishimoto

Why? One Piece has fantastic characters, ingenious storytelling, beautiful drawing techniques... the comic's superb in every way!

Kenshin, on the other hand, is about as bland as it gets.

i dunno if im wrong but, ive been heard (actually i read an info in magazine) that hiroyuki takei, hiro mashima and oda eichiro worked under watsuki nobuhiro all together. so people, please don't accuse hiro mashima copying oda's work. hiro can't help it. it is his style to draw like that, and there's so much improvement since hiro draws RAVE.

iam a huge one piece fan, and I thought after buying fairy tail, I saw some similarities. I don't think that people will look at that, I guess they're into the plot more.

23 Name: correction : 2008-06-27 07:00 ID:jPrL2TG0

all wrong, Fairy Tail didn't copy One Piece, One Piece didn't copy Fairy Tail. The reason why they both look so similar is actually because BOTH were inspired by one common manga, Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball.

Fairy Tail is a thing of copy well-known of One Piece in japanese.

however

One Piece seems to be very different though thought that eminence is low in over sea.

26 Name: Random Manga Otaku : 2008-07-12 18:18 ID:SFYn6rjj

that because it is made by the same mangaka!!! LOL

hey you 'japanese man' over there.. fairy tail isn't one piece's copy! it's because mashima and oda are both influenced by toriyama akira! hah. if fairy tail's a copy, the publication will be stopped for sure. but it's still going right ?

If you're wondering why they're so similar it's because hiro mashime was working as an assistant for eiichiro oda before, that's why you might see a resemblance in fairy tail and one piece

I didn't read Fairy Tail, I've only read Rave, of the Mashima's works and I immediately noticed a significant similarity with Oda's Once Piece, in drawing style, but not big enough to make me think of Mashima as a copycat.

However, of course I got curious, so I searched the internet the biographies of the two authors and I found there's no connection at all between them, except the same influence, Akira Toriyama. But then, neither Mashima nor Oda's style look like Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump or any other of the Toriyama's works. Also, it's not only Mashima and Oda to be influenced by Toriyama, I mean, Toriyama is just too famous, too popular and his works are classics, his fans are too many. And, naturally, as you all can see, not all of the Toriyama fans into the comics business look like Oda or Mashima.

So, I CAN see a very noticeable similarity between the two styles, but Mashima is also original enough for me. But then, Oda has a very big reputation and, you can't deny it, he's a genius and a very creative artist either in drawing as well as story and everything else, including his touching sense of humor. So it wouldn't surprise me that his work inspired or influenced Mashima as well as some other artists that we might not know about. I think only an interview with Mashima himself would really solve the mistery.

Also, I've read a Korean comic that reminds of One Piece in drawing as well. The style is less similar than Mashima's, but there is something that reminds of it. It's Iron Steel by Son Pyeong-Jun (손병준). And, a note for alex (33), in this comic too there is a character that might not exactly look like Shanks, but also lost his arm to save the main hero and is a very experienced knight, but in retirement, though, because he got very very sick, which is not Shanks' case. However, somehow he brings back memories about Shanks.

As for the cartoon of Fairy Tail, why doesn't it look like the comic at all? Rave too.
