Sort of reminds me of an episode of Paranoia Agent...
and also the Overdosing Mirc guy from a while back.
I TOLD U I WAS HARDCORE
Finally, some fair reporting about an Internet subculture. But they gave the wrong impression by ending the story with the parents' (false) impression that their daughter was pushed to suicide by some random people on a newsgroup.
america - fuck yeah!
I'm sure the newsgroup was a factor in her suicide. However, the parents are just looking for somewhere to point the finger. Poor parenting and the girl's own mental weakness were probably just as significant towards the suicide as the newsgroup was.
But hey, I don't really see suicide as a crime or anything. It's your life, so as long as you don't suicide in a really disruptive manner then it's your right.
I totally disagree with >>6. Depression is a mental illness, it affects a lot of people, and it's just as real as any other illness. It has nothing to do with a weak mind, nor (in the general case, and probably in this case) with poor parenting.
Furthermore, suicide severely disrupts the lives of the survivors who knew and cared about the person.
I write this as someone with a relative who recently attempted suicide. He is not at all weak-minded. If he had succeeded, everyone in the family would be suffering.
Depression is a mental illness, and ashers realize that, but suicide can be separate from depression.
The unfortunate part is that people who commit suicide as a result of depression usually do so on the upswing.
When they're in the depths of depression, they often don't have the will to even get out of bed, let alone something like suicide. It's when they start recovering that they become capable of it.
It seems to be a matter of definitions.
So the argument would make two of you play a cat-and-mouth game.
