Does an hikikomori exist also in a foreign country?
I am looking for the foreign hikky friend.
In America, we call them land sea cows... or hermits, I forget which.
ummm we sometimes call them hermits I guess, but I think of old people with long beards living out the midle of no where when I think of the word "hermit". But hikikomori refers to young people, in their teens and 20's, that perfer to be anti-social and cut themselfs off from most everyone else, yes we have that here, I'm kind of like that, but we don't realy have a name for it.
From Wiki: "While there are mild and extreme degrees, the Japanese Ministry of Health defines a hikikomori as an individual who refuses to leave their parent's house, and isolates themselves away from society and family in a single room for at period exceeding six months, though many such youths remain in isolation for a span of years, or in rare cases, decades."
Here's the straight dope, >>1:
In the United States, hikikomori are not allowed. As far as I know there are ZERO hikikomori anywhere. If you try to stay in your room and skip school, your parents will come in and beat you up! That's good old American discipline!
On the other hand, as well as kids are doing well in school, parents usually take let them do in their free time. So, we have:
>>3
I would disagree with you. You can cut yourself off from social life, but you can't just hide in your apartment for months at a time.
> On the other hand, as well as kids are doing well in school, parents usually take let them do in their free time.
Woah, that sentence got botched. I mean
On the other hand, as long as kids are doing well in school, parents usually let them do what they want in their free time.
There are no hikikomori because if you miss a lot of school social workers will come to your house. And parents are much tougher in the US, many of them will kick your ass if you try to take advantage of them.
My problem with hikikomori is that they are using other people - they are not working or going to school, but they expect to be fed, have electricity, and shelter at the expense of their family.
If you want to lock yourself in your room and do nothing in your free time, that's fine, just get a part-time job in the daytime so you aren't a complete waste of resources.
>>6
Hikikomori can't get a job because of poor communication skills.
>>7
They just need to have sex.
Once the hikikomori experience a real vagina, their life will change.
Let's set up a program to save them all by scouting girls to have sex with hikikomori.
What a great effect that will have on society, and maybe the world.
there are those of us that don't have school any longer you know, not everyone here is in highschool still, basicly what Hikkomori is, you know that schizo person that still lives with his parents and shuts himself off from the rest of the world because he knows they won't understand him, that is what Hikkomori is if I understand it correctly. I didn't mean to make it sound awfull, just trying to explain it in a way americans can understand so they will know that yes it exists in this country too.
Hi
There are the wonderful parents in the United States. Why has the generation of us about of the 1980s been a problem?
Family Computer was put on the market when we were children.Such a child is concentrated on one thing in one room for a long time.
Comics were read by the child before sale of Family Computer. However, also outside, comics can be read.
Exchange of comics is also carried out by children.
Video and DVD are released and the Internet permeates.I think that it is the midst in which the environment which can be present in the room increasingly for a long time is ready.
A certain meaning and hikikomori are adapted for such environment too much.
Good job on trying the translation (was it machine translation?) but for those who still find it al ittle confusing, basically I believe he's saying something like
There are such wonderful parents in the United States. Why is that we, the generation of the 1980s, have become such a problem?
When we were kids the Famicom (NES) started being sold. As such, kids would spend a long time concentrating on doing one thing in a room. Before the Famicom was sold, kids would also read manga. However, manga can be read even outside. Kids would also get together with their friends and exchange manga.
I think the release of videos and DVDs, and the Internet permeating into our lives, is steadily creating an environment that's conducive for just sitting in a room for longer and longer times.*
In a sense, hikikomori are just too accomodated to that environment.
*yes, it's a weird sentence.
To which I say:
There is that phenomenon and tendency all over the world. Japan's not the only place which has gotten a huge influx of games and technology (though it's got one of the highest). However, I think the reason why this hikikomori phenomenon is somewhat unique to Japan is because of the attitude of the parents and society - correct me if I'm wrong, but parents seem to think it's better to just keep their hikikomori kid at home and just not tell anyone about it, rather than give them a good talking to. A lot of the time it seems like they hardly even talk to their kid anyway - we have that happening in Singapore too, both parents work and can't really look after their kid...

>unique to Japan is because of the attitude of the parents and society
Thank you for your lecture.and sorry for the so-net's translation soft.so-net is my provider.FTTH networks.
"unique to Japan is because...",it is having just thought that i would say to the next.
I think that there is a common problem about parents or society.
It is that there is a tendency which does not make a decisive decision.A problem is postponed.
Why does it choose such actions?
I think that is because they have lived according to the order given from outside.
Why doesn't it have a self-supporting idea?
I think that is because everybody does not consider about it.
Whenever I think the mental health care situation in the US is bad, I just remember how much worse it is in Japan.
So in other words you believe parents and society act the way they do because they're so used to following orders that they cannot think for themselves? I agree...
I think it's just a (so far largely East) Asian response to technology. I say largely East Asian because we don't hear about this kind of stuff coming from, say, India or the Philippines or Malaysia. This is probably because they're not as so-called developed as the other countries.
Though I don't see it happen a lot in Singapore (which has a lot of technology, and a lot of people of East Asian origin.)
Still, I think the phenomenon is more prevalent in Japan than in other countries.
I think it all boils down to people not getting hit enough when they are children.
>>18 Hit em too much and they'll be anti-social, too.

Why did neither parents nor society consider its thing earnestly?
I think that a success on the financial side has influenced greatly.
Japan is the country where television, the Internet, the cellular phone, have permeated on the average.
Because Japan has a successful experience, the thing which it must surely have is not found by it.
The postwar generation learned technology, in order to eat,
but the present generation is mailing during session.
Inventions that are valued by one generation, will be taken for granted by their children.
This is a rule of all societies.
Nice job trying to paint your limited personal experiences and ideas as fact.
