College Life for People Like Us (17)

I've recently graduated high school, and I've decided to go to college. However, like most of us, I'm not a social person. I don't want to live in dorms, as I'd likely slaughter each and every person who woke me up, interrupted my studying, or made me wait to go to the bathroom. I also HATE women, and could absolutely not stand to be around women in my dorm 24/7 (I'm a woman).

I'm sure a lot of you have had this problem. It seems like 99% of colleges force you to live in dorms for at least the first year of college life, so what do I do? There's no colleges that I can find which don't have 50 million students that also allow me to live off-campus and offer the degree I want.

Where do I go from here? I'm totally lost and don't know what to do. I was home schooled, so I don't have a teacher or counselor I can ask.

Well, your problem as I see it is this: You don't like big schools, and want to live by yourself. However, almost all small schools force you to live in dorms, and don't have the degree that you want. Also, housing in large cities (where the bigger universities are) is expensive.

Pretty much, if you want to get your degree and not live in the dorms you have to go to a larger school. But huge schools usually have lots of people you can talk to. And just because it's a huge school doesn't mean that the classes will all be huge; a school's website should mention the average class size somewhere on its information page. Classes aren't usually moire than 30-something students.

I see your problem.

I was home schooled as well. Luckily (and unluckily) I went to Community college for a few years before transferring, so when I went to college I could go straight to apartments.

My sis is in the same predicament, but decided to live in dorms to save money.

I guess I only have three suggestions:

  1. Live in the dorms. It'll force you to be a more social person and you'll probably get used to it after a while. Although I'm glad I didn't have to, sometimes I wish I did. For a lot of people college is a social thing anyway.
  2. Talk to the college(s) you're considering. Maybe they could make special accommodations, or give exceptions. I'm pretty sure that for some of the colleges I looked at even though living in dorms for the first year was technically "required," they didn't force it on people who asked.
  3. Go to a Community/local/city college for the first year. This really depends on the relationship of the community college with the college(s) you're trying to get in, and the type of colleges/college program you're trying to get in. If you're going to a college with a highly specialized program, doing this could screw you, as you might end up lacking the classes you need.

Good luck!

Stop thinking you're like me.

OP is why homeschooling should be banned. Homeschooling is how artsy-fartsy far-leftists and deranged regressive right-wing creationists make sure their child has no chance of functioning in modern society, where dealing with people from different backgrounds and social classes who have different beliefs and values is NOT optional.

Go see a shrink. You really think it's moral or practical to hate half the human race for the rest of your life?

Live in the dorms. Join some clubs. You'll make friends. Wear headphones and listen to music of your choice during noisy times. Wear earplugs when you need a nap. Study in an empty corner of the library.

Sir, I believe you are confusing home schooling with Yale.

NO GIRLS ON THE INTERNET!

Ok, now that that is out of the way, facing the same problem here, only I'm a guy, I don't hate women (at some point, I would even like to mate with one, for science, of course), and, thank God, I don't live anywhere near a college with 50 million students. O_o

Anyway, two questions. What exactly do you want to study? And have you considered distance education? All the college, non of the hassle. Of course, you won't gain any social skills, but hey, who needs those anyway. Also, remember, don't over-specialize too early. That's what graduate school is for.

Good luck. Or in the spirit of iichan. Whatever.

I think you're confusing iichan/4-ch with 4chan.

You're an idiot and most likely a religious one at that.

My boyfriend and all 10 of his siblings have been home schooled; and from what I can tell, you're just going to have to force yourself to get used to the school system. It's going to be awkward at first, and not especially fun; but it'll pay off in the end.

and >>5 Several of our best presidents were home schooled; and I wish I had been. I could have gone so much farther; and I know people who wouldn't be even near where they are today if they hadn't been home schooled. One of them is about to complete a double major bachelor's degree in linguistics and Japanese after only three years of college.

You believe that people who make digs are creationists are "most likely" religious? You really need to get out more.

10 siblings? Quiverfull much? (http://www.quiverfull.com/)

I think we have to ask ourselves whether homeschooling success stories represent the majority. If you look at the statistics, they don't.

I honestly thought that way too (well except from a male point) but honestly, college dorm life is nothing like that from my experience. Everyone is all cool with each other and they all generally repsect each other's privacy and shit like that. Plus, if you do have a problem with your dormmate, just talk to your RA about it and they would usually allow you to move out of your current dorm and live with someone else.

Trust me, those initial fears like people are out to get you or will attempt to make your life a living hell is not at all like real life and if you decide to not dorm, i guarantee it that you'll regret it later on in life.

I cannot imagine how being home schooled would give you any type of advantage in life. How can OP know if she will hate college life and people in general if she has likely never even left the house for reasons other than going to church.

Just give the dorms a chance, get to know people. Your parents wont be around to shelter you forever you know.

11 here.
>>12 true, and it bugs me. If you've got good teachers homeschooling can be fantastic--being able to move as fast or as slow as you need to, etc. On the other hand, even a great teacher still needs to go out of their way to provide social situations for the student, as they are not getting the social lessons they learn from dealing with other kids in school and on the playground. And a bad teacher will leave th kid so far behind it's sad.

What's sad is that most women hate other women. Just to a lesser extent than OP. Women are always giving other women dirty looks in public, for being younger, richer, et cetera. Women backstab their friends and stop talking to them over trivial things.

And then they go and say that "men are dogs". Well, dogs have some sense of loyalty at least.
