Where have the conervatives gone? (26)

We've had necocon dominance in the Repub. Party for 28 years, and McCain can best be described as a liberal. There's people like Pat Buchanan, but I don't see the palecons taking any power.

So where have they all gone? Why did they stop being "mainstream" in the sense of promoted in the media and all?

Most likely to try and distance themselves from the current super-conservative: GWB.

paleocons lost, neocons won

True US conservatives, believing in smaller less obtrusive government and personal freedom are only really found in The Constitution party and Conservative party. But neither stand a chance at winning -anything-.
And Libertartians... well... its hard to really organize them as one way or another, the only consistent to them is "DOWN WITH TAXES!!!" Which I agree with.

One thing that continues to confound me are peoples belief that the Republicans and GWB are Conservatives.

the constitution party are a bunch of dominionist nutjobs and their commitment to personal freedom is questionable (for instance, they'd like to criminalize pornography and "offensive sexual behavior") but at least they're fiscally conservative and non-interventionist unlike the present republicans. also, they'd let the liberal states secede from the union without a fuss if it came to that

who are the "conservative party"? i know not of them and neither does wikipedia

Seriously, how do you define "liberal"?

Where have all the small-government conservatives who don't believe in overseas adventures gone? Not on the ballot, that's for sure.

McCain is liberal in that he wants to spend your money, just on far-fetched military endeavors rather than social programs, and possibly by putting us further into debt and devaluing our currency rather than direct, honest taxation.

Don't forget that whole let's-give-amnesty-to-all-the-wetbacks thing he sponsored, plus the McCain-Feingold "campaign finance reform" bill he co-sponsored that would have eviscerated the NRA and every other conservative political action group in the country.

> McCain is liberal in that he wants to spend your money, just on far-fetched military endeavors rather than social programs,

this is pretty questionable as a liberal value, conservatives have been doing this since the start of the cold war.

> and possibly by putting us further into debt and devaluing our currency rather than direct, honest taxation.

for reasons beyond anyone's understanding this has been relegated to libertarianism

> the McCain-Feingold "campaign finance reform" bill he co-sponsored that would have eviscerated the NRA and every other conservative political action group in the country.

you do realize that fucked over every other political action group too right

for reals guys its getting pretty sad to hear you talk about the glory days of conservatism. accept that the republican party is what it is and conservatism is what it is and move on to a political label that actually fits you instead of trying to bludgeon everything into a system that doesn't mean anything anymore.

those aren't real conservatives you're talking about.

baldwin will be on the ballot...

Conservatives have gone back to hell where they came from. Hopefully the rest of the neocons in the Republican party will join them soon. Of course, there are many more boys to be raped by the Republican Boy Raper team.

All Republicans have to rape little boys. That is required for admission.

So what are you arbitrarily defining "true conservativism" as? The traditional, protectionist industrialists of the Whigs? The bitterly anti-Civil War Copperheads? The corporatists of the early 20th century? The isolationist anti-intervention coalition of the New Deal/WW2 era? The free market constitutionalists of the later 20th? The interventionist corporatists anti-Communists of the Cold War? It's meant a lot of things in the past and it means something different now. Deal with it, stop trying to rail against popular definitions to reclaim some meaingless pedigree.

Well, in that case it's:
The isolationist anti-intervention coalition of the New Deal/WW2 era

Trouble is, the neocons are still conservative (I define this word as "in favor of status-quo or historical policies rather than new, untested ones.") They just want to go back in time a little less far than you do - back to the glory days of the Cold War, when America was the sole force for good in the world standing nobly and valiantly in the path of the wicked communist Islamic world order. Find a new label if you don't want to be associated with them.

Let's talk about the winner of this election, Barack Hussein Obama. Oh excuse me... President-elect Barack Hussein Obama. Congrats... you seized an opportunity to sleepwalk into the presidency and you did it.

Well, can't say I agree with the guy's assessment of the election or any of the political figures involved, but at least the guy realizes the GOP clinging to its current degree of social conservatism will be the death of the party.

>and McCain can best be described as a liberal.

In 2000, yes, in 2008, McCain is a Bush love'n Neo-con, I blame his campaign manager. On a political test once to test my loyalty to republicans, one one question and answer I remember is
"What would be the best way for republicans to return to power in the white house."
and the answer I picked was:
"Throw George W Bush under a bus and return to true Conservative ideals".

I remember people theorizing that Obama would be a strong Democratic candidate just after the 2004 election when Bush still had a semi-40-30% approval rating, he didn't just appear out of nowhere.
