Lucky Star Sucks (30, permasaged)

it's not funny nor interesting the only reason people seems to watch it is because the girls looks as if they were 6 years old discuss to prove me wrong.

I found it funny in its stupidity. It is not in my opinion a particularly "good" anime; rather I enjoy having my mind numbed by idiocy for 25 minutes every once in a while.

Lucky star is good for the following reasons:

1)Lucky star shows exactly what (male) otaku want to watch. A bunch of cute or hot (moe) girls dealing with the everyday life.

2)Very high level of cuteness, very relaxing and addicting.

3) Konata <- she is one reason alone to watch the anime. Konata is the representative of the girl most of the otaku would dream to have for a girlfriend. Konata though she is "geeky" she is not ashamed, on the contrary she shows it off and supports her opinion. That's what most otaku can't do.

4) Konata and the whole anime gives much credits to the way of life of otaku. It has dozens of references to anime, manga, video games and such.

If you don't agree with any of the above reasons, then obviously you won't like the anime. Just go watch something else.

It's also funny.
In clever ways.

I kinda stumbled into it, thinking it was going to be more like Azumanga Daioh, kinda simple slice of life type format.... And for a while, it was entertaining watching girls speculate about the idiosyncratic natures of people and the weird little things that seem to be for the sake of being. The Lucky Channel segments were hilarious to boot, and I liked some of the old anime references. And then it went super nerd-a-thon, and it just lost the appeal to me.... They expanded the cast by, what, 6, 7 girls, and 4 were variations of Konata. None of these girls brought anything fresh to the show, and only served to cut airtime away from the original bunch.

Maybe it's me, but it seems like the loudest message in all of in the second half of the show is that otaku have no sense of priority or responsibility, value anime and comics over personal relationships, bide their time by fawning over girls with common identifiable traits that make them attractive, and celebrate this because it separates them from what is called "The Mainstream." And I dunno, I see this message about what is otakuism, and I wonder, is it really okay to be okay with that, and to love this show because of it?

Funny, I didn't really get any message from the show. I thought that was the point. It's candy.

Sweet Candy.

There is already a Lucky Star thread. On the front page, even. Don't start shitty threads for topics that already exist.

I mean, seriously, when was the last time you saw any anime with a "message"? I don't think the medium suffers for being "shallow", on the contrary.

11 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-09-26 16:06 ID:OyZ08Do7

anime with a "message?" Hmmmm, oh, I dunno... Princess Mononoke, Ghost In the Shell, Armitage III, Neon Genesis Evangelion (kinda up debate, since there was a lot going on). There's a lot of anime with a theme or message out there. I just figured people wouldn't be so into a show that literally says, "This is you. This is what you want to see. Now worship us and make Minoru a star." To so directly pander to its audience, it's like a kids show. I guess on the other hand, I guess it's relieving to see and observe nerd culture in anime, since obviously it doesn't happen enough in real life....

Lucky Star is a moe comedy. It frequently parodies its own genre and other anime and has a refreshing, off-beat humor and appealing characters with excellent seiyuu. It's tongue-in-cheek humor is often clever and sometimes sentimental. It's like a delicious cream puff. I'm guessing OP does not like cream puffs or other sweets, like ice cream.

There are some parts that might be too sweet, where it exudes so much superficial fan-service that we grow weary of its hollowness, but the show finds clever ways of recycling this excess into self-parody, much in the same way as Haruhi did. Ultimately it is a very self-consciously hollow production, almost superflat in that effect, and all the stronger for it.

A film like Mononoke, while beautiful, has the opposite problem of being a paper cow with too much water in its stomach. It's in danger of collapsing and ripping open all the time. Ponderous where Lucky Star is Shallow.

I dunno. I don't hate Lucky Star that much. I mean, it certainly had a strong start. But, I feel like it lost its staying power after the 12th episode. At that point, its shallow waters oversaturated and eventually destroyed the paper cow called "Moe"

It's funny to see a bunch of nerds gang up and talk shit about an anime that they end up watching anyway. The fact that you started this thread must mean you watched a good deal of the show, otherwise you wouldnt have started this thread. Personally I loved the show, it was part of my main line up of anime to Immediately download as soon as the release happened. I watched it to the bitter end. The ending I will give was sorta shallow. All in all the show was good. I think before you call this anime or any anime shit. You should stop and think to yourself: Why did I watch half of this series to begin with? What caught my eye? Most people including myself know how to eye a good anime if you know it will be bad before u download it or buy it then dont watch it XD! Btw my favorite character was Kagami! So sad that her romance tale was about a fat sweaty otaku lol. Also dont forget to watch the last episode of School Days! They claim it will be as violent as the game! XD

16 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-09-27 20:11 ID:OyZ08Do7

I watched the show to the end, hoping to see some kind of development or return to form, especially since time clearly moved forward in the show. And besides, movie critics don't walk out of a movie halfway through and give it a shitty review. I endured Lucky Star so that I can back up my opinion. Would you rather I not watch the rest of the series before I said my piece? I'll bet dollars to donuts someone would've insisted I finished the show before I made an opinion.

I'll level with you, there was some parts I liked, more parts I didn't. If I had to rate it, probably 6/10. But I can't accept anyone saying that this show was particularly awesome because of it's uber self aware SuperOtaku Moe Bomb attack.

I just wanted to hear u admit that u liked parts of the show and hated the way it ended was all =.= lol

Well, the way I see it, I have nothing against an anime series with no "development" as you say, since most don't. In fact, I would dare say that every anime that presents a complex plot of the sort is usually just doing it for show. Usually the plot in anime is just another aesthetic device, often formulaic and based on database type elements, like the character designs themselves.
There's nothing deep or substantial about it, nor should there be. Just because something has little-to-no "depth" doesn't mean it can't be rich, touching, or well-observed.

Takahata Isao is one of the few anime-film-makers that seem like distinct exceptions to this rule, but even in his highly emotional and almost transcendental films there's a kind of self-conscious flatness, I think.

meh, it's best not to make too many rules about these sorts of things.

19 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-10-03 00:33 ID:OyZ08Do7

Lucky Star didn't have to have a complex plot, or some kind of statement to make about the world or culture, it just had to be going somewhere with what they were doing. It's like listening to a comedian tell a joke without delivering the punchline.

Watching a show with UNhot girls appearing to be around 6 years old would make me a pedo.

Lucky Shit...can't hold a finger up to Azumanga Daioh. I can't stand it. If you want GOOD slice of life comedy genre, watch Azumanga Daioh.

23 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2008-08-17 02:41 ID:yfkiZ04x

You said it. Azumanga Daioh is great. Lucky Star....well, kinda sucks. Who wants to watch a bunch of boring girls talking about a bunch of random nonsense, while meanwhile having very little character? I found them to be very dull characters. People watch it because they find the characters cute... Well, I didn't think they were very cute at all.

24 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2009-01-10 23:01 ID:+J4JPwTQ

it's boring and uninteresting, the character are the same undeveloped stereotipic character personalities that have been recycled for years, and seeing as how those girls look like they're what? 10 years old maybe a little younger, those that give the reason that they are hot are really veering towards the pedophilial side of the spectrum, the fact that the show chronicles the school life of little girls is also something that repels me, that has to be one of the most overused and not to mention extremely bland and uninteresting of all the anime premises

25 Name: KerberosPanzerCop : 2009-02-28 05:06 ID:Wb9gog/H

I found it to be quite unbearable. The characters are cute, but not hot. The opening made me want to commit suicide just to stop the noise. I'd rather watch 90210 than lucky star.

I love Lucky Star, Konata has a "cool" Otaku guy personality and excists purely to poke saterical fun of all the other regular anime characters.

Since the whole show pretty much makes fun of the "slice of life" genre its easy to see how so many "slice of life" otaku can get so angry about it :P

This thread really surprised me because I expected the whole of the internet to be uncritically celebrating Lucky Star. Here I find not only those keen enough and willing enough to recognize the weaknesses of Lucky Star but also people making delightfully level-headed arguments against the show. It is a genuine pleasure to know there are others like me who have no more tolerance for the cliché dialogue, designs, premises, and actions, clusterfucks of one-dimensional characters, and pedophilic overtones that have come to be the substance of seemingly every recent popular anime. Frankly, Lucky Star makes anime in general look more pathetic than praiseworthy. The show seems to say, “The only place you will find people enthusiastic about anime is within an anime, and the type of women you want to be with are too shallow to actually exist.” In turn, Lucky Star insults me by implying that my perspective is limited for having any initial interest in watching the show. You could argue that that is exactly what Lucky Star was aiming for (which would in a way be quite ingenious), but if that’s the case, the show certainly deserves no love from otaku.

What makes me hate stuff like lucky star and k-on the most is that they're the real reasons shows like Queen's Blade and Juuden-chan seem to get unanimous flac from the outspoken anime/manga community. They can bring up any excuse they want "oh there's a urination scene, how OBSCENE D:, cancel this shit now!!" (even though bulma does it as well in the original dragon ball and that didn't stop it from being a mega hit). The real reason theyre hated is because they're not completely moe, that's ALL. Any other reason is a total excuse. I mean how can you attack Queen's Blade for having nothing but fanservice and no plot and then turn around and fawn over lucky star?! They're actually the same thing, except one is 'cool' and actually does try to have a plot and has busty amazonian babes while the other is just totally 100% moe cake.

I have no problem with people liking Lucky Star, even though its excessive popularity and (especially) it's critical acclaim earks me (as I think it's far too unwarranted) I'm not so vocal about it... but when those same people praise lucky star as a "good anime" (if not the best ever) and call Queen's Blade the worst anime ever, I just think something's wrong there. It's just a total double standard.

29 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2010-01-26 11:16 ID:y3n4smr2

Indeed it is extremely terrible. A storyline does not seem to exist and the audience is forced to deal with 25 minutes of superficial idiocy and total, tedious shit.
