To a certain extent, simple design can be a good limiting concept. If a bunch of people base their first impressions on shiny stuff (or lack thereof), does 4-ch really want them as users? Sure, their tastes and perspecitive will change, and at some point they may become a mature, good poster - but does 4-ch have to be their testing-ground?
