I'm a Japanese who loves 2channel. Today I found this 4-ch by chance. Now I'm wondering what kind of people are gathering at this 4-ch forum. Japanese? Taiwanese ? US wotaku?

2 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-21 18:29 ID:Heaven

American, US wotaku

3 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-21 19:03 ID:Heaven

I think most of us are from North America, Europe, or Australia.

Thanks. Kinda weird, but really interesting.
I suppose most of Japanese people are not good at English enough to join discussion here, but it is indeed great for a Japanese 2channeler to have a chance to discuss internationally.

I didn't know japanese people used the word "wotaku." It's funny.

Norwegian here. Hope you enjoy your stay on 4-ch!
Also, what about spreading the word and telling people on 2ch about 4-ch?

7 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-21 21:23 ID:2g6Su9TU

I think 2ch already are sick of getting 4-ch namedropped.

By the way, I also live in Norway, yay!

There are some Japanese who are brave enough to try and post here. Most post on the Japanese board, of course, but some do post on the other boards too.

I've noticed that the Japanese spell "otaku" ヲタク or simply ヲタ。 ヲ, like を, is sometimes romanized "o".

Sorry, but I don't get that as I don't know many japanese characters.

13 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-21 23:08 ID:mrs2aEGv

In the U.S., the word "otaku" often refers to just a fan, like a sci-fi fan. This is patently wrong and causes confusion. Even in Japan "otaku" with the spelling "o" can refer to any sort of wacko (like a photography otaku) and not just Akiba-kei.

When you spell it "wotaku" people will know you're referring to Akiba-kei. (It's pronounced the same, though.)

And for the record, I am an American wota, here for friends & fun...

14 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 00:54 ID:Heaven

>>13
imho on international anonymous boards (well, 4chan and 4ch etc) "wotaku" probably has the same connotation as "wapanese" or "wigger", emphasizing the "white" part. I don't think most of the are aware of the katakana spelling variants.

15 Name: 6 2006-01-22 02:09 ID:Heaven

>>14
That's why I thought it was funny. Well, I'm wiser now.

16 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 03:51 ID:mrs2aEGv

>>14
Really? Where would you see that? I'm probably the only one who used "wotaku" before this thread, and I meant the katakana spelling.

I'm posting from the U.S., the state of Arkansas. I'm not sure what we're known for, besides Bill Clinton. That, and lots of rice and soybeans.

I've NEVER seen the word wotaku used on 4chan or 4ch. Honestly. I've never seen it romanized in conversation before this thread. I've only ever seen it in Japanese, therefore I don't think it has any alternate, "racial" meanings. ( ´_ゝ`)

19 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 08:56 ID:Heaven

>>18
It doesn't. But on first time hearing it, most english speaking people associate it with "wapanese". But of course it doesn't have that meaning.

I'm surprised this site doesn't have more Japanese users like world2ch did...!

>>13
Yes, you're right. That's exactly what I mean.
In Japan, or at 2ch, an akiba-kei otaku is usually referred to as ヲタク or ヲタ instead of オタク. ヲ corresponds to "wo."

FYR, I'm not a Norwegian. I'm a genuine Japanese living in Tokyo.

Other questions I have are what has made you to get acquainted with 4ch and to what extent you have information on 2ch.

>>20

Well, I was first a user of 4chan (which you're probably familiar with). I still go there for funny things, but I wanted intelligent discussion. That led me to find 4ch.

As for my knowledge of 2ch, it is very limited. I have read most of the English material about 2ch I can find, and I have even posted in the English board there, but not much. I am currently studying Japanese, and would like to talk more on 2ch once I am able.

22 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 16:08 ID:Heaven

As best as I can recall, here's how I found out about 4-ch:

I used to have a register-only forum on a website of my own, running the unbelievably shitty phpBB software. It fell into near-total disuse for a few months, and I didn't bother to install the weekly security updates. Then I thought, "Hey, this board is probably totally insecure and open to abuse by spammers at this point. I should just take it down."

So I took it down for about a week, then decided that I should still have a board of some sort on my website, in case people wanted to leave comments somewhere. I somehow found out about Kareha -- or already knew about it but gave it a second look -- and decided to try that. At this point I read Shii's essay on anonymous BBSes (http://wakaba.c3.cx/shii/shiichan) and was thoroughly convinced. Then, I was browsing the Kareha support forum one day and found a link to something at 4-ch. Within another week or so, I decided I liked this 4-ch website and started posting to it.

Now my personal Kareha forum is also dead (its corpse turned over to yet another charnel house), but I still visit and enjoy 4-ch.

I can't read or write Japanese (probably never will) but I know 2ch is a really huge BBS, that they make a lot of AA there, etc etc. Most of what I know about 2ch is in the English Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2ch

23 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 16:57 ID:Heaven

I'm an American who can understand Japanese decently. When searching for Japanese stuff online, I'd come up with a lot of 2ch links and be pretty confused by them at first.
Eventually, I got the basic idea of the site by lurking, around then world2ch popped up where I could get to post without worrying about my poor Japanese. I really liked the site and was interested in the idea of anonymous posting.
As world2ch died, someone mentioned "4chan", so I went to check that out. But I still liked a text BBS better. So when I heard about 4-ch, of course I started to post here!

24 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 19:33 ID:Heaven

I think I first found out about 2ch from this thread:
http://4-ch.net/ascii/kareha.pl/1112629846
We use a lot of 2channel memes. 4chan.org led me to 4-ch.net, 4-ch.net led me to 2ch. We know a lot about 電車男 here (it's very popular). I'm not fluent enough to look at 2ch, so I don't go there very often.
I'm from Ontario, Canada, and probably going to study International Business.
Let me be the first to say 「4-chへようこそ!」

25 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-22 23:03 ID:YULEPN/5

I'm a regular over on 4chan, and initially visited the world4ch board... eventually someone mentioned 4-ch, and here I am. I really enjoy this style of bbs... I just wish we had more posters. :(

The sum of my knowledge of 2ch is that it is huge like XBOX, and seems to be where most of our memes are imported from.

Another Norwegian here. Found 4-ch through the wakaba/kareha boards and shii's introduction to 2-ch style boards.

36 Name: Random Anonymous 2006-01-26 00:40 ID:HH99cJ4B

Hmm...don't remember how i came to 4-ch. I came to wakachan/iichan in general when 4chan went down, like most people (probably), and came to 4chan right as it opened after hearing about it on FYAD...yes, i used to be a goon, so shoot me :\

Aside from that, i'm probably like almost all young american kids on the internet. I'm failing out of school because i spend to much time online, and would rather focus on teaching myself the language of a country i'll never be able to visit due to my bad grades, than my true studies. I listen to eurobeat more than american music because i'm an elitist faggot, and hate all hot-topic/toonami fags. I spend my time not online playing Bemani...Pop'n at the moment, i skipped IIDX because it seems to be becoming too popular (again, my elitist side). I used to be into DDR, way back in the day (team gwai lo 4 lyfe), but have since AAA'd most of the game and don't care anymore.

As much as i'd like to think i'm unique, i'm probably just a clone of every other anonymous here on the wild wild internet. :\

The only thing that makes me interesting is that before the internet stole my life, i used to be a amateur skater :) I rode for DVS (flow team), and Chocolate (flow again). Makes me wish i didn't become such a lazy slob :\

" Alright! Alright already! I'll tell you everything I can about that thing!

What I know is that it's name ends in -seki, it originally was a pig portrait, then a Suiseiseki hater decided to add her hair and eyes. Later on I saw numerous fanarts of it being stupid/getting killed. It's got no relevance, and it's only a 2chan meme! Now stop posting it! :("

Seriously, people, learn to tell the difference between Futaba and 2ch.

The original poster is talking about 2ch, or 2channel: http://www.2ch.net/. Discussion boards, world's largest BBS. 4-ch is similar to this.

2ch is not Futaba: http://www.2chan.net/. Futaba has image boards, and has its own set of memes and ideas that are mostly completely different from 2ch's (although 2ch is so big that everybody uses memes from them). 4chan and iichan are like Futaba. Futaba is much bigger than 4chan, but still not at all as big as 2ch. If you ask people from 2ch about Futaba memes, you're most likely to get a blank stare.
