It should be incredibly dumb, but it is oddly captivating.
Although, the latest plot twist seems a bit of a stretch, but I guess it's too early to pass judgement on that yet.
If L had found the death note instead of Raito, how do you think the story would have developed?
The story does start to suck around where the scanslations are right now, but it's starting to pick up again (at chapter 46)
I think, if L had found the note, he would have also used it to punish criminals as Raito did. And I bet the ones trying to track him down would be Raito working along with his father! I bet L would be harder to catch, though.

What about Rem being female? I was surprised, I mean, I guess she does look a little feminine, but Ryuku wears lipstick too! I didn't even know Shinigami had genders.. I always assumed that when Ryuku had said those who use the deathnote don't go to heaven or hell meant that death note users become Shinigami when they die, and that's how new Shinigami are made... But then I guess they could still have genders from their previous lives as humans~

I've just got a quick question. I'm on chapter 16, and Yagami starts talking about feeding the Shinigami apples. He starts talking about this as an aside, as if it was mentioned before. Where did this come from? I certainly never read anything about apples in the preceding chapters. Thanks.

I just finished reading chapter 63 .. Man, this is one of the best mangas I've ever read. The only problem is that whenever you try to describe it, you can't even spill some other characte's name out besides "Kira" or L because it would spoil a good part of it.

It's kinda sad how Deathnote crapped out. It started out as a unique and suspenseful story but now it's just dragged on way too long. They should've ended the whole series, or at least the plotline involving L and Kira, with the Yotsuba corporation story arc. Instead it just keeps slogging along into mediocrity.
Hmm... I stopped reading at chapter 20-something. I just hate Raito that much.
But I loved L. I'm saddened to hear of his death. ;_;

over here, shonen jump is one of the two or three magazines that run. the other one is shoujo beat, which is a girl's equivalent of jump. they're $5, monthly and much smaller than the japanese Jump. coamix tried to sell their raijin comics magazine weekly, but not many were willing to pay $5 a week, and it failed.
volumes of a single series (same format as japanese tankoubon) run anywhere from $10 (most common) to $20. most manga never run in manga magazines, but go straight to book form.

I know it got #1 in the boxoffice, but I didn't hear if it was acutally good or not.

I read all of Death Note, and I liked it up until the end of the L Arc. Light rule! Then... in the Near and Mello arc, it kind of went down hill and Light lost in the end. Its not fair... I was rooting for him from the beginning T~T

Yup, I gave up at volume three-- Misa's introduction. I think they had a decent concept, and Light was a well written character (Personality however, is a completely different matter). As for the monkey man, I don't care about L. :S He's a hikikomori who finally decided to get a tan. whoopdeedoo.
The L / Light mind battles were pretty boring as well. It was all these constant face shots accompanied by "BLAH BLAH DICK". Man, I was so bored. ~
Death Note = 16 pages of BLAH BLAH DICK, 2 pages of stuff happening.
So I can imagine the anime will translate to 2 minutes of OP/EDs, 19 minutes of BLAH BLAH DICK and 3 minutes of stuff happening.

Ending of the manga was quite stupid. Light didn't deserve to die like that... He was always the "coolest" one, outwitting everyone, and now he made one error and died a pathetic death, his last words being "shit..."

The first time I noticed Death Note interesting was when the live action movie of it was broadcast last fall here in Japan. I still haven't read the original manga but fortunately Death Note anime has been in production now and so I watch one episode a week. By the way, what do you think will happen if a owner of a death note writes a person's name after his/her surname is changed due to marriage, or after he/she undergoes plastic surgery; their faces look completely different from the ones that the owner recognizes? Are they still doomed to die?

Tsugumi Ooba wrote many additional rules [http://www.deathgod.org/main.php?x=info/dnterms], which was IMO pointless (she included them only as omake though), as she would never cover all the cases... but it wouldn't make sense, if once someone knows your name&face, you could just change them. There must be something constant. "The person whose name is written in this note shall die". No exceptions. Not even for you, Light :)

Ending of the manga was quite stupid. Light didn't deserve to die like that... He was always the "coolest" one, outwitting everyone, and now he made one error and died a pathetic death, his last words being "shit..."
IMO, he DID deserve what he got. And more, perhaps, since he committed mass murder. Don't get me wrong --- I like Light as a character; he's definitely a unique protagonist (hehe, understatement of the year?), but he needed that downfall; it's what happens to all dictators and people who elevate themselves to a "godly" level: they fall, HARD, revealing their true, rather ungodly selves. The ending of DN was great, IMO. Painful to read (I cringed a little at how low Light had fallen: screaming, trying for the very last time to wag his silver tongue to escape the trap) . . . but it was well deserved. The whole manga up until then had been him winning, winning, winning, and we all knew that payback was coming. (Ryuk, after all, told him in the very first volume that he'd write his name down in the end.)
BTW, I don't think his last words were "shit" . . . I thought they were something to the effect of, "Screw. You. All!" XDD Only with a few more obscenities. Not very glamorous, but pretty realistic, IMO; if I'd been dying like that, I'd probably be angry and cursing and screaming, too.
awesome series but I hated how it ended. I wish Light had died differently instead. I thought it was funny how after he died all these people start to worship him.
In the original Japanese text, he says, "chikusho," which would be like calling someone a bastard (Ryuk? Near?), but it's more literally something like "brute," I believe.

I loved Death Note when it was L's arc. After that, it went downhill in my opinion....

However, I imagine if Kira saw your name and then you changed it before he could write it down, then you wouldn't have any problems unless he later discovered that you changed it.

personally i prefer the manga. the ending was kinda crap though, you'd think Light's death would be more interesting

The movie was boring as hell. No offense, but if they were AT LEAST as the actors of the Cutey-honey movie (to mention one) it would've been a little better

No, it's not about his past. Acording to the Japanese official website for the movie (L changes the world), it's supposed to describe the last 23 days left for L. In between the day Light died and the day L died in the movie 2.
