After licensing Air Gear, Del Rey announced they would not censor it like CMX did with Oh Great's other popular work, Tenjo Tenge. And what happens? On the release of the first volume they're caught editing dialogue to remove a reference to a rape. Normally this would result in fans gnashing their teeth and venting on the internet while the company remains mute or dismissive and goes ahead with production.
In this case, almost unbelievably, they admitted they were wrong in editing the content and pledged to restore the original text on the next printing. All this not from just a faceless company rep or press release, but from the individual employee responsible for the edit!
If I was cynical, I would point out that this is a great way to get obsessive fans to buy the same book twice.
But I do like Del Rey, so I won't.
"Del Rey proves it needs some quality control"
thanks Del Ray!
though, any opinions on tokyopop as compared to del rey and other publishers?
tokyopop lol
"TokyoPop, lol," indeed
Del Rey also has a fair number of crap and foul-ups under its belt.
Tokyopop ワロス
Del Reay is pretty good, but I have a hard time finding there books where I live.
Othello is the only reason i need to love Del Ray. i can't thank them enough for translating that series (even though it is kinda short)
Only just heard of Del-ray via Negima + Air Gear, but I already love them.
Great translations, nothing censored ^^
Everyone here's gonna say that Del Rey IS DA BEST.
well, i'll say this only once:
OH HELL F%^$ING YEAH, THEY ARE THE BEST (for now) AND I GOTTA SET AT HOME TO PROVE IT.
THEY ARE THE NEW ONE IN DA BIZNES, YET THEY DONE IT RIGHT (with some little errors on da way) IN EVERY WAY A MANGA SHOULD BE.
THANK GOD, I'M ALIVE TO RECEIVE THIS GENEROUS BOUNTIFUL BLESSING FROM YOU, DA BIG GUY UP THERE.
Anyway, this is my opinion yet if if found any1 bashing Del Rey, watch you f*&^ing back cos i'm maybe there to bash your f&^%ing head into bloody pancakes. Muahahahahahaha!!!!!
p.s: That was just a joke except for my opinion. TQ ever1 listening in da post here & today.
The only bad thing is that you pay two whole dollars more per volume.
>>13
what do you mean by that?
what i'm asking is which company do you buy your manga and what's the title you bought?
anyway, in you post above sounds like you're comparing Del Rey with some other publishing houses.
>>12
don't worry to answer my question.
that post was just a joke and an exageration i've made about my support to Del Rey. I REALLY LOVE THEM ACTUALLY.
>>1
True but they still edited vol 2's cover ;)
>>7
I only remember negima and air gear....mind telling what other fair number and foul-up's they got under their belt? O.o
Anyway; yeah, comparing them with every other manga-releasing company they are the bestestestestest in releasing the goods...
but then again thats my opinion :D
I like any manga publisher that doesn't destroy the original manga script by censoring certain parts out because the're too afraid of offending the readers. Censoring out stuff just to please one reader destroys the entire meaning of the story in my opinon.
Yeah, I always find that Del Rey's releases are always a cut above everything else. I don't mind paying an extra 2 dollars for quality.
The problem with Viz is that (imho) they go overboard with the sound effects. And has anyone else noticed that there's ALWAYS little paper shavings on the edges of the pages? Bugs me immensely.
Tokyopop goes underboard, by not translating a lot of the time.
What does trust mean in this context anyway? Is it that common to buy volumes blindly?

Some people buy things on a whim, I guess.
When I go shopping for manga, I usually know what I want right off the bat.
I buy 80% planned 20% impulse. If I never buy on impulse, I never try anything new unless a friend suggested it, and occasionally the random buying has pulled up a good series. Sometimes it pulls up one which really sucks, and all you do then is give the volume you bought to someone you don't really like.
yeah, del rey manga releases kurogane and kagetora, so i'm cool with them
They just licensed Me and the Devil Blues. This kicks way too much ass.
I like Del Rey's releases the best... They always seem to have really good quality and good translation notes at the back.
Viz is my least favorite publisher that ironically, always ends up translating my favorite series' >_>;;
Their sound effects are a bit too extreme for me. I like the original Japanese, with just a smaller sound effect next to it.
Viz doesn't always include translation notes, and that bugs me sometimes.
>>18
Yeah, I always wondered if anyone else noticed that.
I'd be reading, and all these white things would come snowing off the book when I turned the page T_T
No matter how much you brush them off, there's always more >_>;; Sometimes, it seems like they cut too much off, because some words are cut off...
>>27
yeah they always translate my favs as well. I hate their cencorship. I was able to obtain Japanese copies of I"s for about .25USD each, so I bought those to go along with it, but it irks me to think of all of the cencorship.
TokyoPop is ok, I like many of their series', but I don't like the translation.
But Del Rey is still kind of no-named. It's more on the level of Dark Horse and ADV.
Speaking of which, BOYCOTT ADV FOR NOT TRANSLATING GUNSLINGER GIRL AND DESERT CORAL FULLY!!!
>>28
I heard I"s got censored a lot. Hmmm. And Viz censored that one panel of FMA where Greed was put on a cross shaped stone, they changed it to a more circular stone. I'm not a Christian, so I guess I can't really speak for them, but I really don't think that censorship was neccesary. Seriously, if you're offended by something like that, I'd think that you wouldn't be reading FMA in the first place.
But hey, whatever.
Tokyopop doesn't translate sound effects a lot. I can read some hiragana and katakana, so I can kinda understand the sfx, but people who can't read japanese and are depending on Tokyopop's translation are left out in the cold.
I kinda lost hope in ADV when they put Yotsuba&! on hiatus for so long, so I'll have no problem boycotting them... <mumbles> they already canceled my aria and mistranslated tactics...
Great, more cancelled stuff. Did they use a lame-ass excuse like "it's not appropriate for us to publish it", or is that line copyrighted by Seven Seas?
Needs more Mushishi
The other day I actually saw a rainbow with the colours the wrong way around.
>>33
actually every rainbow has its own twin reversed rainbow above it, it's just a whole lot dimmer, so it's easier to spot rat a mile away than seeing both twin rainbow together.
anyway, back to the topic, i love del rey since they translate negima but these days, they sound weird somehow
How can people take Del Rey seriously? How can you buy manga that includes such sparkling "translations" as "OMGWTFBBQ!?" and think you got your money's worth? They completely make things up and try to force extra "humor" where there was none to begin with. It's exactly like TokyoPop's handling of Love Hina.
>>35
But they're the only people awesome enough to release stuff like Mushishi, Love Roma, ES, Parasyte and Me and the Devil Blues.
Now I mean, I am a Viz fan but I guess that they could add some more to thier volumes and they do bring out some of the best series to the states.I do like Del Rey too because they bring my favorite Clamp series.
All of this debate is the reason I'm learning Japanese. :D
Viz often feels the need to censor a graphic image and then leave the other equally graphic ones uncensored. :O
Like where a pic in Shana novel was censored and a much more risqué pic of the same thing in Shana manga wasn't.
I hate them so much for that.
Boycott ADV for not releasing GSG and Yotsuba faster? If you want to solve the problem, the solution is to actually buy more, 'mless...so they'll have enough money+market to make translating new volumes financially...I'm getting all the volumes of Yotsuba and GSG they have out so far, just a few more.
