Unless it has been edited, that talkpage doesn't look all that bad, unless you are incapable of understanding that much of what was said is not serious. RL names are frowned upon, and none appear in the article as it is now, meaning any previous RL names were edited out.

I found ED several months before the chans. So I thought it was about livejournal.

I use Livejournal to talk to a relatively close-knit group of friends. As a result, there aten't many idiots on my friends list.

But, if I were to read Encyclopedia Dramatica, I would have assumed that LJ was mostly intended for whining and flamewars and trolling.

It became apparent to me that the people who edit ED hate practically everyone and everything, whether it deserves derision or not. And I saw right through that into the core of self-loathing behind it.

But, I know how easy it is for a kid to take the wrong thing seriously, especially while in high school.

Wow, it happened the exact same way for me (only I didn't really post ED to 4chan, I knew better than that). I was there when only I and a couple actively edited and the Recent Changes log for two, three days could fit in one page. (Hell, we probably know each other) I really liked it when it was mostly a LJDrama injoke filled with geek humor, exaggerated parodies of Internet stereotypes and angry LJ users who should have known better than to create drama.

Then, 4chan happened. 4channers started pouring in, who misunderstood the style and started making their (really bad) articles about /b/ memes. Come on, [[100 years ago]] and [[lulz]] on every 2 paragraphs stopped being funny a long time ago, for fuck's sake.

/b/ filled ED with their people. In return, every single new /b/tard will find ED, read the 4chan related articles and proceed to make 4chan shittier by doing nothing but sprout stupid memes 90% of the time. It's a never ending cycle of lameness.

It's not all bad, though. I can't deny that ED is still useful sometimes, for example, when you want to get up to date on subjects that Wikipedia refuses to cover.

As one of those who found 4chan mostly through ED, I didn't post memes because I figured if they were what I thought they were, nine people would post the appropriate meme at the same time, and so forth. I was also on Usenet, so I'm already familiar with the life cycle of a meme.

The core of what you call "chan culture" is in Japan and has zero overlap in culture and userbase with the ED crowd, and very little overlap with most of the english-speaking anonymous bulletin boards - save for a few of them.

And regarding that, the core of the English-speaking anonymous bulletin boards is 4chan, but /b/ isn't the only board there. All the staff have pretty much completely given up on /b/, but they are trying hard to help the rest of the site to become more mature. Pretty much anyone who posts on one of non-/b/ non-porn boards on 4chan is likely to loathe the ED-7chan-/i/-"we are legion epic lulz" idiots.

Also, the Onion is extremely funny. ED isn't funny at all. Even if a few passages could be funny the first time they are written, any good writing on ED is eventually wiki-raped by meme-spewing idiots.

It's almost funny how serious people are taking something like ED. Especially given the notion that you don't have to visit it, you don't have to do anything with it. As long as you aren't a complete moron or attention whore on the internet, then you aren't going to end up on ED.

The site has a very disjointed, neurotic style, but it follows through the entire site. Essentially it chronicles the seedier side of the internet and Web 2.0 in particular. It's a voice against the self-important dolts on Youtube, MySpace, etc. That voice may be masked as a shreiking 16 year old boy full of pent up rage, but it's a voice none the less.

Besides, if you actually look through ED, they hate everything. Almost nothing escapes criticism and the only bias is unto itself.

It was decent back when it conformed to its own mission statement and acted as a wiki for internet drama that Wikipedia wouldn't touch.
Now it's overrun by kids who want to make it Uncyclopedia With More Bad Words, which even seems to include the founders now.

Most of the articles there are based on something amusing, but it's impossible to read any article long enough for the self-evident funny to shine through since the whole thing is ruined by idiotic superfluous garbage. For example, there are a number of articles on paedophiles. Many of these have good content. Why then does almost every single other article need to start with a baseless unfunny accusation of paedophilia, or whatever, when that has nothing to do with what's actually interesting about that subject?
Unfortunately the current userbase almost universally misses the point.
