I am having problems understanding what some 2ch boards are. Please help me understand them.
What is 光通信 for? My dictionary says it means "light-wave communication", sending information with lasers. But that does not seem to be what people discuss on the board. Can anyone define this for me?
Hikarituusin is a name of company.

Please consider working on the Wikipedia entry!

bad idea ... it is hard work for me.
Hikarituusin is only a name of company.
but that board is now used for talking about telecom industry.
>>4
I understand now. I thought it might be about telecom and not just laser signalling. I didn't know it was a company. Thank you!!!
Next to find a translation. I think I will use "Telecommunications", although it would be funny to say "Sprint".

When I finish most of the work on the navi it'll be online (watch for announcements on 4-ch) and you can use the translations from it.
I can't understand 資格全般. I get 'general capabilities', which doesn't make very much sense in English.
What is ピュアAU? A brand name?
>>8
I think I figured it out. The board is for high quality audio equipment. In English, maybe "Stereophile".
>>7
資格全般 means like "anything about license"
license like lawyer, certified public accountant, system administrator, oracle master, bookkeeping, etc, anything will do.
The navi is now online. Feel free to offer translations for anything that is missing. If you let your mouse pointer rest over a link it should pop up the Japanese name of a board (HTML title property of an anchor).
or just http://4-ch.net/2chportal/
>>13
Indeed.
The vocabulary list there is quite nice.
In the section 裏社会 the first 板 is called ちくり裏事情. I can't understand this at all. Some sort of reverse situation? The link is called "company", which doesn't help me understand. Can anyone explain this?
I hope you know about http://info.2ch.net/guide/map.html
The vocabulary list is great. Great place to put it also. You might like to add 嫁 for 読め
>>17
ちくり = 密告
to inform the police/autority (usually anonimously, secretly)
裏 = back side, under the curpet
事情 = situation, reason, the state of things
裏事情 = 裏の事情、世間の目から隠れている事情
= hidden affaire (?)
Updated navi coming soon (whenever Squeeks gets it uploaded).
New questions:
2. Under 政治経済 "Politics & Economy", what is ゴーマニズム? "Sesame-ism"?
3. Under 生活 "Living" there is a board called "Walker+" but its link is "ticketplus". Is this some sort of ticket sales agency similar to the USA's Ticketmaster? I don't know what to call it.
4. What does いたづらはいやづら mean? It sounds like a pun...
Answers
1 宝塚 and 四季 is a famous theatrical company.

http://kageki.hankyu.co.jp/english/index.html
2.ゴーマニズム stand for 傲慢(ごうまん)(insolence)-ism.
This is comic's title that is written by KOBAYASHI YOSHINORI.
He is caricaturist and he write very nationalism comic.
3. That board deal with ticket infomation(trains, the moves, sports, etc).
"Walker+" is't sales agency.
In this case,"Walker" stand for 'a person who is going out'.
4. いやずら is dialect expression of "いやです".
'いたずらはいらずら' stand for 'I don't like a mischief.'.
HIROYUKI(tha Web Master of 2ch) like a pun.
(I learn english. if I have mistake, please correct.)

Squeeks hasn't been updating the navi, so I put it here
Please note that I am NOT trying to take over the hosting of this translation, I'm merely putting it up so people can use the latest version.
Actually, I think he finally did. But having a mirror is not bad anyway.
I am sending out an update again. As always, please email me or post here about new boards, translation suggestions, comments, complaints, (ry.
>>23
I couldn't find a better way to translate ゴーマニズム so I just wrote "Goumanism". If anyone has a better suggestion please offer it. My main problem is fitting on one line in a 200 pixel column.
>>24
Is "walker" a common word for a person going out? Or does it only show up here? If it is common I should add it to the vocabulary list.
>>31
Actually Squeeks has been updating the navigation, dickhead.
I hate it when I forget my tripcode :(
>>34
ゴーマニズム is a coinage by KOBAYASI YOSHINORI.
It is KOBAYASI-ism.(very nationalistic, aggressive rigth wing)
I think translation is difficult too.
"walker" is't a common word.
May be,It's origin is name of famous playground-infomation-magazine "Tokyo Walker".
「dickhead」= たこ、バカ、やろう。
ちんぽあたま (I hope I got that right) would probably be a bit more accurate in its meaning.
>>34
I think
>>37
is correct. There's a whole series of (Wherever) Walker magazines, including in Taiwan and elsewhere, so it may not be common usage, but it's a very familiar phrase. The magazines consist of postage-stamp-sized pictures of shops and restaurants, with maps and brief but thorough descriptions.
dick= チンコ
head= 頭
逐語訳は チンコのトップ。基本的に「バカ」です。
Forgive me if my Japanese is incorrect.
dickhead, noun : insulting terms of address for people who are stupid or irritating or ridiculous [synonyms: asshole, bastard, cocksucker, shit, mother fucker, motherfucker, prick, whoreson, son of a bitch, SOB]

(笑い) ^_^;
I see the 2ch navigation isn't linked anywhere on the frontpage anymore.
Could that be changed?
Would be nice to link the folding@home stuff somewhere too.
Seconding >>45
What is シベリア超速報? I translate it as "Siberia Ultra Reports" but that doesn't make much sense to me.
Is it just another VIP board?
web制作 is really hard to translate. It's a board for discussing client-side web stuff like HTML, Javascript, CSS, Flash, and so forth. This is usually part of "web programming" in English, but 2ch seems to differentiate it from server-side "web programming" with PHP, Perl, CGI, etc. I've provisionally just translated it as "Web Work" but does anyone have a better idea?
Also, web収入 is somewhat difficult. It's the board for discussing ways of making money with your websites through affiliate programs, advertising, etc. I translated it as "Web Income" but that seems clumsy. Any ideas?
When I have answers to these questions and >>47 I'll release an update to the English navi.
>>49
Webdesign and webscripting is not the same, although you often cross-use it to create websites.
Although CSS and HTML should be all that's needed to create a good website, Javascript is user-side and therefore part of "web design". Flash is part of it too (a CRAPPY part).
Do you even know what the three different VIP boards are about?
http://ex10.2ch.net/heaven4vip/ needs to be included, btw
> They're where you can just chill and do whatever and totally relax! They're VIP Quality!
So you don't know how they are different to each other?
58, I'll have you know there are literally dozens of chillax forums on 2ch. Look closely at the board list and you'll see Lounge, Pleasant Discussion, a whole Gimmick Boards category, etc. I think this is done in order to provide multiple opportunities for a 2channeler to find his niche and make some e-friends.
sort of like IRC channels...
That still doesn't explain the difference in the different VIP boards which were created after each other.
So will someone provide us dumb English-speaking 4-ch'ers a history of News 4 VIP etc?
According to http://shii.org/2chgrounds/view?url=hammer&name=vip.show :
14 June 2004: News4kuso created in the News category (long a shithead hangout)
18 June 2004: Renamed to News4VIP !!!
July 2004: VIP moved to the gimmicks category
Oh, >>61: News4VIP, for some reason, has proved to be the most popular chillax board by far, and even the most popular board on 2channel-- 5 times larger than the biggest live-TV board. Therefore, I believe spilloff forums were made.
Ah, thank you for giving insight!

That thread is informative, thanks.
