Okay, so I lied and here is a new thread WHERE WE DISCUSS EVERYTHING GENSHIKEN - BECAUSE IT'S WINTER!
And also because Episode just got subbed:

This is now the "BEST EPISODE EVER" thread.
BEST EPISODE EVER.
They should have used "awesome" instead of just "great" when Madarame (what an awesome name, btw) referred to the last episode of Kuji... fuck, what was it called? I can't remember the name of the show nor bring myself to care about it too much.
The whole anime-within-anime gives the possibility for a lot of nice storytelling tricks & treats, like the melting of the image of Kohsaka's bald head (which was just a frameless panel in the manga) into the flashback in Kujik... Kujibi...
The art somehow seemed a bit off at times, especially the facial expressions. But all in all it was a pretty good episode. Wouldn't say "BEST EVER" yet, though.
Does anyone have an idea of how much of the manga is going to be covered by the series, at least this one season?
Kujibiki Unbalance (Kujibiki Un-BAAAAA-lance! Wow, is that opening theme ever a great parody of generic opening themes.)
There were a whole lot of great adaptations from the manga in this episode. Kohsaka's bald head was one, and I also really liked the "You don't have a girlfriend!" scene. Kuga-P's head sticking up from the bottom of the frame in one scene also made me crack up for some reason.
> Wouldn't say "BEST EVER" yet
What's the whole thing with Kuga-P about anyway?
http://www.cyril.dreamhost.com/a/src/1099492740254.png
Oh yeah, and in connection with Episode 2: What do you like better, the Genshiken manga or anime?
Personally, I think the manga shows a lot more life.
Also, there's more detail to conversation and story, a bigger range of the dynamics of normal mode -> sd mode and somesuch things, but those are all things that usually apply to manga when compared to their anime counterparts.
Come to think of it, the only anime that I liked better than the manga is Azumanga Daioh...
Then again, I am a huge sequential art nerd. I wonder if the common japanese otaku has any interest in foreign comics at all? Not that there would be a need to turn your attention and money away from Japan if you live there, so I wonder...
There are some X-men/US comics shops in Japan but they are rare - besides, the comics are in English.
> besides, the comics are in English
Hellboy seems somewhat popular, judging from references to it.
On the production side, it's pretty obvious from FLCL that some people at Gainax like Jamie Hewlett's work. Also, South Park. And reading Ghost in the Shell makes me think Enki Bilal was an influence on Masamune Shirow (witness especially the Russian diplomat woman). Möbius has done cooperative work with japanese artists, like _Icaro_.
Also, the Genshiken manga has more detail, but the anime makes up for it in atmosphere, I think.
>>10
Hellboy & South Park seem to be popular because they have been accompanied with major movies that came into theatres. As for the other stuff, it seems only natural that professional artists would have a wider ranger of artistic references than your average otaku or doujinshi contributor.
Come to think of it, I just thought about how cool it would be for really underground stuff of all different sort of countries to reach the other countries somehow. I have seen some very weird stuff in one asian themed issue of STRAPAZIN, for instance. But that's probably best for some other thread.
All the references I've seen to Hellboy predate the movie, though. And it shows up in pure fan work, too, like here: http://www.cyril.dreamhost.com/a/src/1099505408238.jpg
And yes, seconded on the underground stuff. There are far too many excellent artists who go unnoticed.
...an interesting data point would be to know if Hellboy has been translated into Japanese or not, and what other comics might have been translated.
>>13
Found the issue of STRAPAZIN I was talking about:
http://www.strapazin.ch/magazin/heft54/heft_54.htm
Maybe it would be a good idea to start a new thread with the names of some great japanese underground artists, their names in kanji, links to their websites, publishers, etc.?
>>7
The manga is better for geek references and character moments. The anime is fun, but too toned down sometimes, like the scene where Madarake explains erogames to Saki. The jokes have probably also lost some laugh value from having been read already.
BEST EPISODE EVER! TAKING GENSHIKEN INTO DIVINE DOMAINS!
One of the translations I really enjoyed. Too bad they didn't overtake jinmen's "What the hell, you brought a girl along!? She's gonna cramp your style, man!".
And there's a thing that begins to annoy me: the height of the subtitles. Somehow I am annoyed by them reaching so much into the actual screen and not staying at the very bottom where they belong.
Ah yes, I really liked the deviation from the manga storyline in this episode.
I noticed the translators missed a few jokes that were in the manga translation, but nothing major.
Which jokes were missed? If you mean your one favorite line of Sasahara in the crowd at ComiFes, there's some interesting posts regarding this in the Genshiken thread @ Animesuki:
http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=21906&goto=lastpost
Just a few at the start. The manga translation has Sasahara saying that Kohsaka "stands out like a sore thumb" on the train, while the anime translation just says he looks excited. Also, when they arrive and Madarame says that "he wouldn't go that far", Kugayama says that Kasukabe would smack him for that were she there, while in the manga he just says that she'd make fun of the whole convention. I haven't checked if the japanese lines are the same in both, though, but at least the second one seems like they just missed the joke.
But as I said, those are minor things.
"I sense a storm coming"
...is a reference to what?
It's a pretty common cliché, so I doubt it's a reference to anything in particular.
> ..is a reference to what?
Could it be seen as a good thing or a bad thing that the writers/artists for both the manga and anime go to such depths in terms of clichés and references to somewhat obscure bits n pieces in known anime/manga series?
Also, why the hell has animenfo.com rated it a "comedy".. its got more brains than that.
> Could it be seen as a good thing or a bad thing that the writers/artists for both the manga and anime go to such depths in terms of clichés and references to somewhat obscure bits n pieces in known anime/manga series?
kuga- is part of his name, and -pi might be from 'piggu' (cf. P-chan from Ranma 1/2) or at least seems to have similar connotations.
Jinmen's notes explained the others, and the short version is still available:
http://jinmen.pyoko.org/translation-notes.php?project=Genshiken
♥ Kanako ♥
Nekomimi!
It's those damn high subtitles again. Really annoying in the scene between Ohno and Saki in Ohno's flat. Might be me being neurotic about things being in my way, but I still cannot get over it.
Anyway, Ohno is displayed as a very sweet character with a nice voice to go with, just like I figured she would be. Which gives me a chance to compliment the choice of all the other voice actors in the series, as well. All fantastic.
I am also digging the sparsely used music. Really nice & subtle, fitting the mood. Apropos mood, it was a good episode, but again I am thinking with all the rushing of the story of the manga, the mood lacks a bit, which is a pity, as I enjoyed that element a lot about the manga. But perhaps that's just natural when you converse manga to anime.
Maybe it's just my history with 4chan, but the "Bridget and I-no" line just makes me crack up every time. Also, seconded on the voice actors, they're awesome.
The next episode will finally break the manga translation barrier! I can't wait!
I enjoyed ep 4~ I agree with >>33, I would have liked to see the Bridget and Ino costumes (^-^)
I like Ohno, her oyaji-love is funny~ And I liked her explination of why she likes cosplay. Looking forward to more~
Also, how come they're allowed to use Guilty Gear so much in it? Is Sammy sponsoring it or something? Or just allowing them to mention/show it so much?
>>35
I noticed they have mentioned Guilty Gear once or twice, but if you could, point out more references they have made? It'll strengthen your argument at least, and inform idiots like me.
There is an awful lot of references to other companies' products in Genshiken. Most are masked by just changing one letter or changing the name but staying in the same area of meaning, etc. This seems to be a common practice in both manga and anime, likely because it isn't common to bash or criticize someone else in the general public on the one side and companies aren't sue-happy for alleged copyright infringement because of mere mentioning on the other side.
Mainly I was talking about how they use a bunch of actual shots from the game. Like >>37 said, in most anime and such, names are changed slightly, and many are in Genshiken. But Guilty Gear uses it's own name, cosplay of a character from it, and a bunch of screens from the actual game (including in the opening.)
They've gotten permission to use a number of characters and such for references. Not all of them, some references are still munged, but that's the real Haruka from Kiminozo in episode one, for instance. The credits list the characters and copyright holders.
Ep 4 was great, except for the last scene. The extended broom swinging ran so long it felt awkward.
<3<3<3 Ohno.
Omake! :D
I cringe at the thought of someone trying to translate the Tenchi Muyo/this end up/handle carefully reference for a dub. In fact, would the permissions they did get for the anime create a difficult situation for licensing, like with the multisource Super Robot Wars games?
> like with the multisource Super Robot Wars games?
Quick summary for that, please. The difficult situation, I mean.
>>41
Super Robot Wars has characters from multiple mecha anime series.
And ADV are the fuckers who won't let it be published in the US.
ADV? More than one company owns the North American rights to many of the animes in SWR games. That's the whole problem. IIRC it's hard enough getting cooperation for a Japan release from all the studios without throwing the foreing licence holders into it.
Somehow I managed to get my dirty mits onto 1-31 of Genshiken the manga... RAW. I found it lurking around share, althought I got no clue on Japanese. Someone want me to post a page or seven onto an imageboard somewhere?
Nevermind, that's exactly what you're talking about and it's on hongfire anyways. Stupid delete function.
I was hoping it'd get past the manga translations, but they spent a whole episode on this chapter. Good thing too, I suppose, because we got a lot of Saki action.
And the adaptation of that one 4-koma at the end was awesome too.
I didn't get what was the president implying to Saki.
I first thought it has to do with her and her boyfriend in-school activities, but the post-outro seems to say it has to do with Ohno? And no, I haven't read the manga.
It's implied that he has hidden cameras in the club room. So he may have witnessed Saki and Kosaka doing something, as well as Ohno changing into her cosplay outfit.
I don't know what those responsible for the artwork have thought when releasing this (please refer to http://www.cyril.dreamhost.com/a/res/837.html). It's just horrible at times and it makes me feel really bad for the author of the manga to see his beautiful work hacked up like this.
Also: Saki blushing as she was defending the otaku was awesome.
You can maintain your cool but you cannot control your cheeks, Saki-chan!
Laffo @ her flipping over otaku & otaple.
>>55
It's the nature of sequential artwork (particularly animation) that not every frame will be a masterpiece... although I agree, it has been quite rough in places.
>>58
Manga (or comics in general) are also sequential artwork. Of course, the sequences produced in animation always require some sort of mass production, but that's no excuse to not do a quality check and somehow I doubt that that particular process was carried out correctly in some episodes, esp. the 5th (haven't watched much further but I have heard it doesn't get better later on).
Face it guys, no one gives a shit about creating the illusion of human movement or even using a ruler for basic chara art (witness Madatan sitting down in ep 05) on tv. Just be happy that they're still willing to employ talented va's.
Well, that's what I want to say, but since today is the day of giving and then a day or two later raping the shit out with small pox, I will give modern anime companies my apology juice.
The Genshiken anime is still a brillant adapation anyway. For everything they fuck up, there's still something awesome like Saki's "ooooooooooooo" mini-scream.
Or something like Madarame citing "Nekomimi!" in Ep 4.
is kosaka some sort of transcendent entity existing outside the regular karmic cycle all us mudanes have to suffer through?
Either that, or he's looking by the window a lot - from that room opposed to the genshiken club room, in ep1. With binoculars.
Yeah. If you have the manga raws, the colour title pages from Chapter 31 show various scenes in the club room on TV screens (including Ohno changing with the curtains shut), but maybe that's just artistic licence.
So, what's the intro a parody of?
With the shadows receeding slowly in the room.
Is this a Gundam parody?
WAi! I love Ohno...a character I finally can relate to...sigh
wheeker digs bald strongmen?
maybe I do maybe I dont....tho I wish my boobs were bigger than i could totally be her.
Ohno-tan age
OMG age like usual for new fansubbed episode
The extra wallscroll gag at the end was perfect.
I liked the Puyo Puyo bit better, myself.
Can't help feeling sorry for Saki-san though. Hopefully, as the post-credit bit hints, she'll at least learn to love the pain.
> It's amazing that he'd last for 30 minutes!
I lol'd. Also, at the "IMOUTO!?" bit.
One thing:
the voiceover guy says Saki never played a game again. But the outro shows something different.
Bad translation, bad scripting or comedic lie?
I was surprised at Sasahara, for all his sister bashing, he actually stood for his sister against Saki. And his sentence was very mature, "Please do not hit others for things I have brought on by myself" or some such.
The ending was probably just meant to be from when she was practicing.
But up to now, all the endings have been following the story sequence.
story -> ending/outro -> post ending -> preview.
ep2 had a scene from the episode (kissing), so it's not unprecedented. But Kugayama and Tanaka weren't there when she was first practicing... maybe it was implying she never played games with Kosaka again?
> "IMOUTO!?" bit.
what?
Also: Great episode. It's just too bad that the art just won't improve.
Ep 7 (just out): Kuchiki-san makes my eyes bleed. I mean, most of the lesser characters are badly drawn, but he's not even badly drawn in a decent way like Kugayama. He looks like he crashed in from Family Guy or something.
> But up to now, all the endings have been following the story sequence.
I wouldn't give such formal considerations too much credit. The series hasn't been very consisent with that. For instance, episodes 4 & 5 didn't have any opening scenes before the opening sequence & the theme.
I am thinking that the voice-over guy is just used to create some sort of more epic feel to certain story elements, and since that is always done in an (at least partial) ironic way, I wouldn't rely too much on it as some sort of reliable source.
AAAAAAAAAARGH

Big deal, you have to check another website. Unless Solar drops it.
>...the art just won't improve.
I think that for a "real life" anime the art doesn't have to be impressive. It's even better as it shifts the emphasis on the story rather than the pretty pictures. The parts where the art has to be real good should be the Kujibiki Unbalance segments, IMO.
Actually, I didn't think the art was bad in ep6. And earlier? The only ep that comes in mind is ep5 [IIRC] where I thought Masarame (sp?) was drawn sloppily, but he wasn't even one of the characters talking. he was a side character in that scene.
Real life isn't always pretty so I wouldn't be surprised if this was intentional, to not try to "beautify" the anime.
He looks exactly like he looks in the manga. He's supposed to be more crudely drawn than the other characters.
> I think that for a "real life" anime the art doesn't have to be impressive.
But it shouldn't be a sub-par, inconsistent, anamotical disaster like it has been for some episodes now, either. Hands being smaller than faces, mouth position wandering within the face without reason, perspectives wrong... &c
Eh?
Hands are smaller than faces, you know. ^^;
you know if your hand is bigger than your face you have cancer
Please study anatomy!
Also, put your own hand on your face. From wrist to middle finger, it should exactly go from chin to the part of your forehead where your scalp hair begins.
Mine's approximately 3/4 of an inch shorter.
Also, 3 inches narrower.

from solar-fansubs.org
As some you might be already aware, Animesuki has received a notice from Mediafactory, Inc. It is a Japanese company which holds copyright to some of the series we've been subbing (Genshiken and Rahxephon). They requested Animesuki to remove the links to the series mentioned.
While we haven't received such a letter so far, it's clear that the company doesn't want their work distributed. So far fansubbers have been operating on a kind of unwritten agreement with the Japanese companies: sub the series, but only until it's licensed. However, this seems to be no longer the case, at least with Mediafactory. Thus we're removing our releases of Genshiken and Rahxephon OVA from BitTorrent and XDCC bots and ask you to stop distribution as well.

Ep7: this time I noticed the "real bad art". ^^;
When the prez arrives in the room - Madarame has a jacket and in the next scene he is wearing a shirt. Also the perspective of the table/room/characters is terrible. Madarame seems to be the one getting the most bad art abuse.
While in other places the art was okay, especially Saki. Lots more effort goes into Saki generally.
Poor Madarame...
Anime-Faith is continuing this as a solo project (state of affairs as of December 10th):
back on top you go for 08
animation wasn't great, but it had soul unlike the past few episodes
i really like the attention paid (/additions) to madarame's dialogue in this episode
>unlike the past few episodes
ah come on - all the eps have soul, IMO.
i was not referring to the overall soul (i would never insult yokotosama) of previous episodes, simply that the animation was obiviously farted out by a curry robot that was fed kimchee.
Seeing the preview at the end of episode 10, do you think Ogiue will make her first real appearance in the anime in that episode? It's basically covering the same episode in the manga.
If not then, hopefully episode 12 then!!!!

BEST EPISODE &c
Made me laugh and smile a lot. Madarame's "hahaha" dance near the end was the creme on the cake of that episode. Surprisingly good episode for such little plot. Maybe I was pacified by the implied message that Madarame has the hots for Kasukabe - major plot development but not played out, so this episode was more of an overture to the romance (or misery) still to come (plz plz plz season 2!).
Also: Madarame is awesome because he is buying his ero doujin with the Society's budget.

Oh My Goddess TV, Genshiken, Hinotori, and Phantom Acquired by Media Blasters (2005-02-20 10:57:59)
At their Katsucon panel today, Media Blasters announced that they hold the rights to the Oh! My Goddess TV series, Genshiken, Hinotori, and a 3-part OVA called Phantom. John Sirabella said that he believed that they also has the rights for Kujibiki Unbalance (the show watched by the Genshiken characters), but has to double check. A full panel report will follow later, which will also include their live action acquisitions.

There are no "new raws" for the anime series.

i also saw a poster for genshiken season two, was it fake?
ive seen the mangas, they didnt look too bad. Lots of boob jokes, so it works out.
about the genshiken manga's being licensed..
WTF!?!?!
I'm a loyal fan. I DO buy anime and manga of series I like. Even ones where I've the entire episodes off of fansubs...
But the rate the manga volumes are coming out is ridiculous! I've purchased the first 2 volumes and have been told that the rest are being released within 3 month time frames of one another!
This is the sort of shit that stopped me from buying all the noir and mahou senshi riui(sp? louie in jap) dvds when they got released. THEY WERE RELEASED 2/3 AFTER THEY WERE LICENSED!!!

>> 165 sry, was a little sleepy when I wrote that. Let me rephrase:
I support anime. I do buy anime and manga when it comes out in north america.
I am disappointed that it takes such a long time for some licensed anime to be released.
For instance, new volumes of the Genshiken manga are being released 3 months apart from one another.
These delays are what stopped me from purchasing noir and mahou senshi riui since they took nearly 2~3 years to be released after they got licensed.
You know that they're published in Japan at a rate of one every half year, or even more seldom, right? And that it's still ongoing?
I believe 166 just got owned.

Genshiken in english is okay, felt weird watching it, they pretty much made an excellent series.. like at that convention episode, or the one where that guy gets caught looking at the porn

It's a full Kujin-an Series this fall.
Whenever the Genshiken final manga volume comes out, they will announce the 2nd series.
If it's a Kuji-un series they're gonna be showing this fall, I think it's okay. The story is interesting enough, at least from the pieces that I can make out from the Genshiken manga and 3 episode anime. Plus, wouldn't it be great to finally know what the genshiken characters are going nuts about? Since there's no Kuji-un manga (or anyone planning to make one) that alone for me justifies a series....
...But it shouldn't be at the expense of a 2nd Genshiken season!! For the love of GOD!!! How long do we have to wait for Ogi-chin to make her anime appearance! (Cameo in last ep. ending NOT COUNTED)
oh, and >>173 ! I don't see any difference between the separate and Premium DVD's. Except, of course, a box with great Shimoku art to cover the horrendous Media Blasters DVD covers.
The kujian series needs no hypothesis, it has already been confirmed. What I wonder is if they're not hinting at a second Genshiken season after all with that image of ol' paintbrush-head.
I wished I finally could get my fingers on the DVDs (german official DVDS! With Extraas! I need them but their nowhere to be found!) and to hear all the news from the last weeks made me almost go crazy!

Subs for the three OAV eps are out. The second season proper starts in the fall.
Yeah there's not much point to scans when the real thing is buyable.
hmmm my comment got deleted. Oops! I 4got we are not supposed to put anything on here about scan sites! Well my appologies!!!
2nd Season starts soon. Who's excited?
Dattebayo has picked up the series, it would seem... I have yet to watch it, so I can't comment on the quality of their work.
So when does the second season usually air? Tuesday, wednesday, what?
