[Konata] Lucky Star [Otaku] (267)

1 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-06-30 08:13 ID:XPRq0Dkg

Fans of Lucky Star, come here! Let us discuss the series!

It started off horrible (food oh my GOD), but after they switched directors, it was great. After watching the first episode, did anyone actually force themselves to watch the next? Most people just dropped it, but it has changed for the better.

How is Guerrand's version? Any silly stuff like converting tsundere to bipolar, or moe to turn-ons?

Why does that bother you? You already understood the words, you you didn't need them translated. Those who don't, need them translated.

That's kind of the point of translation, to actually translate words.

Seriously, Strato's work for a.f.k. is just about the best in the entire field of fansubbing, and I say that as somebody who dabbles in translation himself. I really don't see any reason why one would prefer any other translation, unless maybe you have become so used to the awkward work that passes for translation for so many groups, that you think that is actually something to strive for?

112 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-12 06:29 ID:8Jfc6a1T

>>111

Depends what you call "awkward work"

I like the fact that [Guerrand] can get his up within 48 hours of the original broadcast first of all.

But I also find a lot of karaoke and lyric subbing for OP distracting, I don't appreciate Strato's rather awkward insistence on translating moe as "turn-ons" and "tsundere" as bipolar. I don't see any need in attempting to translate "ittadakimasu" or similar phrases that don't make any sense in English.
Don't get me wrong [afk] does a fine job.

I don't mind a translation that cuts very close to the original language, even those that maintain third person or some of those Japanese portmanteaus.

It's like the difference between pulpy or pulp-free orange juice. Some people like to have more of the original fruit floating around in their drink.

113 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-12 12:09 ID:Heaven

> Depends what you call "awkward work"

I mean writing English which is nothing like anything a real person would say. That would very definitely include leaving words untranslated. Once again, if you really want the Japanese words, you're already hearing them and understanding them, aren't you? They don't suddenly disappear just because they are not also written out.

If it bothers you that somebody is actually translating into English, maybe you should be learning Japanese and not bothering with translations at all, hmm? You're not really going to properly understand those out-of-context Japanese words properly when they're part of a bunch of (awkward) English anyway.

If you get hung up on the fact that a handful of words are not treated as you like them, you're missing out the far more important issue of the rest of the translation being in proper and natural English. This is far more important for properly communicating the spirit of the original text. Awkward and grammatically incorrect English carries far less emotional import than natural-flowing English, and thus loses out much more of the characterization. That is a far larger issue than whether you get to satisfy your otaku elitism by seeing Japanese words printed on the screen or not.

114 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-12 17:36 ID:54vjV8gn

hrmmm...

but moe is still moe. There's no Engslish word for moe, nor should there be. Everybody who's going to be watching Lucky Star should know what moe is.

Some things just don't get translated, even in Criterion Collection editions of Yasujiro Ozu movies. The subtitles just cop out for all the "gokurosama" and other phrases. It doesn't feel all that unnatural.

I don't think it is the role of the translator to Americanize or "Anglificize" the language. It's to convey meaning. The flavor of the Japanese can and in many cases (like in Lucky Star) should still be there, since it's so culture-centric.

115 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-12 23:54 ID:Heaven

> I don't think it is the role of the translator to Americanize or "Anglificize" the language.

Just what the hell do you think translation is? Once again, if you really have to have the dialogue in Japanese, then learn Japanese. Complaining that translations are translated is still incredibly silly.

(PS: Strato's still using "moe" in places where the subject is the concept of "moe" itself.)

116 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-13 02:14 ID:WVpsyk3w

>>115

>Just what the hell do you think translation is? Once again, if you really have to have the dialogue in Japanese, then learn Japanese. Complaining that translations are translated is still incredibly silly.

I know one thing a translation certainly should strive to avoid, and that's being recognizable. If I have to stop even for a split second to wonder why X was translated as Y, the translator has failed.

And no, there's a difference between pure translation and "Americanization". The latter is a pitfall for many commercial translators, but I find most fansubbers, including Strato, most of the time, tend to avoid it.

I think this respect for the original language/culture that demands a bit more knowledge from the viewer, is what makes fansubbers more attractive than their commercial counter types.

117 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-13 12:00 ID:Heaven

> I think this respect for the original language/culture that demands a bit more knowledge from the viewer, is what makes fansubbers more attractive than their commercial counter types.

In other words, nothing but elitism, plain and simple. "It's BETTER because OTHER PEOPLE don't UNDERSTAND it!"

118 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-08-13 14:12 ID:bUsAM2ah

>>117

No, it's not "BETTER because OTHER PEOPLE don't UNDERSTAND it"

It's better because "I understand it". There's a slight difference.

You say it's "elitism" like it's a bad thing. Good things come from learning about stuff. Lucky Star wasn't written to pander to the masses, and even less so for American masses, where so many cultural references would go right over their heads. Why should fansubbers do any different?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that episode 24 is definitely the weakest of the series.

That dance routine, I mean, just sinful. They should have changed the song. It just didn't mesh with the world at all, it wasn't in context; felt like a rush-job.

Un-reinforced fanservice that lacked the charm or grace of some of the equivalent culture-fest fanservice in Haruhi.
Bah...

Well, they had to go out one way or another, and Lucky Star isn't conducive to climactic endings, maybe they should have acknowledged that fact more in this episode.

meh...

167 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-09-18 08:01 ID:XDiV8VAM

>>166
Un-reinforced fanservice? They jam it down your throat just about every other episode. If it's not a comment about Miyuki's excessive cans, it's about that green haired chick's lack of them, a Haruhi or "old school" anime reference, or some allusion to the naughtier side of otakuism. Nevermind that the only otakus, or main characters, for that matter, are girls, and this show is simply drenched in that intangible idea called "moe." This show isn't a show, it's fanservice incarnate, like its teaching the viewer how to act like an otaku. ...Yet somehow, it's supposed to be endearing. Not to me of course, I think I was expecting a little more substance than what it had to offer, but that's me.

171 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-09-18 18:19 ID:Pyjn82sg

Well, I mean, OK if you want the show is entirely fanservice.

But that doesn't make bad contextually-jarring fanservice acceptable. IT has to be wrapped in a convincing Lucky Star package first.

I just felt the animation for the last sequence wasn't really up to scratch either. I don't know, I think they could have scratched their heads a little more for the last sequence you know? That unnatural laugh at the end didn't do it for me.

Why can't they just do a face-fault, or some other kind of tsukkomi thing like in the rest of the series?

172 Name: Random Anime Otaku : 2007-09-18 19:50 ID:XDiV8VAM

I'll never forget the last episode of Lucky Star. I had been waiting for so long for them to do the dance. I was patiently sitting, waiting, knowing it was coming. It was all I had left. Now, finally I have experienced it. I no longer have any need for anything in life. My life is complete. I have reached a level of enlightenment beyond nirvana or any so called inner peace. After waiting for over twenty four weeks I have finally been able to experience the greatest moment in the history of anime, no mankind, the enhanced Lucky Star dance. I was sweating the whole episode, I knew it was coming, I could feel it. It was calling to me; I could feel its force telling me it was coming. It wanted me and I wanted it. From the second I saw them talking about a cheer-leading routine I knew it was coming. Everything I had been hoping for, this whole anime season, no my whole life was leading up to this very point. The second it began I showed no emotion, my eyes were glued I was perplexed and amazed. The meaning of life and the entire history of man and the universe and everything before and after flashed before my eyes. It was the most amazing experience of my life. After it ended I looked to the floor and noticed I was now in midair, hovering five feet above the ground. I have no need for worldly possessions. I know everything and need nothing. I completely understand the universe. I have reached Lucky Enlightenment.

Let's see how many forein otaku will realize that the whole of the last episode is a reference to a certain famous anime movie. (grinning)

What? The scene where Minoru Shiraishi answers his cell while MCing? Or the whole Culture-Festival like in every other Slice-a-life anime comedy out there?

Enlighten us!

Actually, if I could recommend this to anyone, I would tell them to skip the first and last episodes.

Actually the ending song which Shiraishi sung is the main theme of the cirtain famous movie.
The movie and the last episode shares the same subject, and maybe the messages from those creators are same too.
Reference to the movie can be found in Haruhi series as well. It seems the Kyoani staff really love the film.

That's the point. Then why they need to put that horrible thing at the ending

By the way...

To everyone complaining about a "lack of development":

Well, the way I see it, I have nothing against an anime series with no "development" as you say, since most don't. In fact, I would dare say that every anime that presents a complex plot of the sort is usually just doing it for show. Usually the plot in anime is just another aesthetic device, often formulaic and based on database type elements, like the character designs themselves.
There's nothing deep or substantial about it, nor should there be. Just because something has little-to-no "depth" doesn't mean it can't be rich, touching, or well-observed.

Takahata Isao is one of the few anime-film-makers that seem like distinct exceptions to this rule, but even in his highly emotional and almost transcendental films there's a kind of self-conscious flatness, I think.

meh, it's best not to make too many rules about these sorts of things. Mostly we're talking about a pop culture that doesn't care for complex stories, phony or otherwise.

The lack of development thing is so true though. I mean look at Konata... she's still short, and still has no breasts.
