Anybody watching this show? I just downloaded the first 6 eps and seen the first one, looks promising.
As far as I can tell, it's the only anime so far to feature the Yoshinoya Rant.
>the Yoshinoya Rant.
which episode?
1, at the very beginning. I haven't seen the rest yet, but I will soon.
It... looked promising, but it really doesn't go anywhere, story wise. It does have some funny moments, and the artwork is some of the best I've seen in years, but the lack of any character/story development really kills the show for me. Admittedly, my favorite episode was number 4, in the first half, when Nozomu is warning all the shop-keeps about this potentially abusive person.
Watched to 3, need to start again.
No point, there's no story development.
Not defending Lucky Star. You should see my rant in the Lucky Star Sucks thread.
Trust me, I'm not. I quit after 5 episodes. I guess I just expected more out it, especially since the artwork is simply gorgeous, and the show made what could be my favorite opening sequence ever.
At the moment I'm eagerly awaiting each new episode. I can't quite agree with most of you, I personally think the show is quite good and I like it a lot. Can't quite tell why though - the style is fascinating me and some of the characters are very interesting. Could use some more character development though. Don't get me wrong, the show is not genius or brilliant but I still think it's very good.
I have to say however that I was vastly disappointed by episode 6. Hopefully the next ones will be closer to the original style again.
I've watched to Five. I'm liking the characters and music/style. but it's true that the show isn't that funny, except in a very perverse way. I guessing this is the thrash-metal equivalent of otaku anime, subversive and stupidly self-conscious for the sake of stupid, self-conscious subversity and an aggressive, viscerally-appealing style?
Well, NGE wasn't too different, so I guess I can buy it.
But NGE had a lot of stuff going on, not just (absurd) references to Lucky Star.
dunno... ^^
Sebastian!
I didn't think 6 was that bad. I really liked that demonstration reel with the desynchronized voice. It's little things like that that make this show's appeal I think.
I've changed my mind. This show is actually quite funny. ^^
so.. who to carry next?
Yeah, they're really slow on subbing this one. Did AFK drop it?
I know that Guerrand subbed ep 6, but his website says he's busy studying math or something, so he'll be afk for a while.
as for bure-tsuki, and [bure-baka?] I should think they'd still be in the game, but not sure.
bure-tsuki DID sub ep 8, so I'm guessing my hopes are on him.
>>18
urr, I mean 7
OK, so apparently, bure-tsuki is taking extra time to get 8 and 9 out, so it should be good when it's done. I just hope the extra time doesn't translate into those annoying animated karaoke titles.
http://notopic.openoneware.com/2007/09/26/bure-tsuki-sayonara-zetsubou-sensei-update/
"Go make yourself taller" is now my favorite insult.
Strato seems to be back now. At least he got ep 21 of Lucky Star finished.
burebureburebure...
>>20
Thanks for the info, I managed to find ep 7. It was a lot better than 6 which I'm very relieved about. Now I can look forward to 8 with good hope.
Gaahhh!!
Zetsubou shita!
Subs Where???
where is the manga??
only can find vol 1 and 9, the other volume between them is Zetsubou to find
Have you looked everywhere yet?
Volume 2: http://www.mediafire.com/?2xgytty2m4r
well, actually I could only find that, though I think there are scraps floating around here:
http://www.mediafire.com/?dmqmkwzhmwe
http://www.mediafire.com/?fydmnigqy0s
I didn't look very hard though, if that's any consolation.
thx. maybe i'm not look every where yet, but why they translated the manga and not publish it on the net? are the manga licensed?
More importantly, a.f.k. has episode 6 out.
what's with all this afk fanboyism?
Frankly, I have nothing against this guy, but does he really deserve such fierce loyalty?
I've found some of his translations in Lucky Star rather mediocre to say the least.
What JLPT level have you passed?
Because he actually knows how to translate stuff, and he writes excellent English, something very few fansubbers can manage.
AFK is the guy who gave us Lucky Star!
..........
Seriously, I agree with >>33 and his reasons for liking AFK. I'd also like to add that his translations are very natural sounding, (i.e. if someone's speaking in a less formal form of Japanese, it'd reflect in the subs too) and oftentimes minimizing the need for those obtrusive explanatory notes at the top of the screen.
What, the guy who inconsistently translated tsundere as bi-polar? And other otaku slang-terms as standard English?
Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and his work, and thank him deeply for the first 15 episodes of Lucky Star after which he dropped out of the race, but I wouldn't call him the end-all of translation. There are plenty of comparable fansubbers, some even superior, that work faster than afk. I have no complaints with Bure-Tsuki and Guerrand, only praise for the fact that they dispense with those god-awful karaoke subtitles.
No, seriously. Starto's work for a.f.k. is pretty much the best in the business, and he's usually faster than most, too. There really aren't more than a handful who are even anywhere near his level of skill when it comes to translation. I say this as a sometime translator myself. The man is a monster.
ok, fine...
But I'd rather have my Guerrand subs on time.
Especially since I thought Guerrand did a job just as worthy as afk, and in some cases, more natural IMHO.
You know when we waited for afks translations we got them a week behind, guerrand actually gave it to us a day or two after the release of the episode in Japan.
Strato is a single person doing all the work. He was releasing about three days after broadcast when he was doing just Lucky Star, and a week later when he was doing all of both Lucky Star and Zetsubou-sensei. Christ, grow some patience and some gratefulness.
I never mentioned anything about the guy's personal life. I am just mentioning what was happening at the time. It's cool that he was a one man team and I would feel offended about people talking like that about me, but! Facts are facts and I am stating them. Besides even before SZS was released he only brought out LS a week after the initial release. This is what my point is leading to, if your dont like the wait time, look for someone who will do a faster job instead of a quality job. All in all if I wanted quality in my fansubbing I would just buy the DVD.
Hah, I've been very satisfied with the quality of both fansubbers!
Many DVD translations wouldn't do as good a job. I'd be curious to see how they translate Lucky Star if it ever gets licensed.
> Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and his work, and thank him deeply for the first 15 episodes of Lucky Star after which he dropped out of the race,
Um... he did finish, you know.
Actually on the subject of licenced subs, it was interesting that with Haruhi, they left in "moe" as-is (although the note still said it meant turn-on... hard to explain moe in one line of text on the screen though.) Times are changing.
>>43 I've been meaning to pick up the english dub of Haruhi. Is it any good? I dont really like her english voice, even though she plays many good english dub roles, I dont think she fits Haruhi that much. what do u think? Oh crap sorry for making a Haruhi question outside of the Haruhist thread.
> I've been meaning to pick up the english sub of Haruhi.
fixed.
So, any way, back on topic, I hear a second season's coming out.
If the fansubbers work REALLY FAST, then maybe, just maybe we'll have all 12 episodes by the time season 2 starts.
Just maybe...
>>46 I want more episodes before then =_= the new season doesn't start till next year. (Haruhi)I saw the english sub already XD I was actually talking about the american release! Dubs arent that bad you know There are a lot of great dubbing companies out there. I was aking if the other voice actors were any good or not in the show.
The voice actors in SZS?
I think fuura-san might be cast a little off, but not sure, she's quite cute, but sometimes she sounds a little forced and unnatural, but Itoshiki is pretty good, as are the supporting female cast.
as for Haruhi, I don't know how you could pass up Goto Yuko, Shirarishi, Hirano aya, Chihara, and that guy who plays kyon for some no-name american dubbing company, but to each his own...
(^__________^)
>>48 that did not answer not one on my questions... I watch SZS I know the voice cast of that show, I just want to know if the eng dub of Haruhi was any good! (>.O)/
Go ask in a Haruhi thread, you idiot.
>>50 name Calling is not nice XD In anycase I appologized for asking a Haruhi question outside of the haruhi thread in my other post. In anycase I never expected it to be taken this far =_= I frankly dont care anymore -I watched a few eng dub episodes of it already- Back to the main topic though. When will episode 9 be released for SZS?
It's nice for everyone else.
(O.o)?... No Comment.
"When it's done" is the answer to every single question of that type. Don't bother asking it.
Why is when it's done in quotations? Also I am sure there is a website of the main fan subbers. Don't they usually post how long till the next release?
Bure-tsuki doesn't have a website that I know of, but you might try their IRC channel:
#Bure-Tsuki @ irc.rizon.net
>>55
It's in quotation marks because it's a quotation. Isn't that normally what they're used for?
You really aren't very clever, are you? No, pretty much no fansubbers ever post when something will be released, and they absolutely hate it when people ask, because they are doing this for fun and for free, and they are not working on a schedule.
Now to get back to >>31: Why the a.f.k. fanboyism?
I was just watching a.f.k.'s episode 8, and I was giggling like crazy at the "Die, Nico-tards!" line. Now, I know enough net slang to understand that line in Japanese, and I know Strato got that one pretty much spot-on. So I started wondering, how did Bure-Tsuki fare on that pretty tricky line?
They've got "Die, Nico-bo" in there. "-bo"? That means absolutely nothing at all, and isn't even just the Japanese word either. It makes no sense, and is not funny in any way.
Furthermore, in just the couple of lines surrounding that one that I happened to see while searching for it, there were tons of errors. When Fuura combines "gum" and "shampoo" into "gumpoo" for no reason, they for some reason translate this as "gum hair"? That was entirely in English to start with. The joke where Fuura suddenly acts as if they were talking about a fire drill, and mentions that you should duck down to avoid smoke, is entirely obliterated - they just made something up to replace that. The next line that references this is also changed to something entirely different than its real meaning.
So yeah, this is the reason for the a.f.k. fanboyism: Strato actually gets things right, and actually gets the jokes he's translating so he doesn't butcher them, unlike so many others who play with fansubbing.
Watching Bure-Tsuki's ep 8 a bit more, it's pretty much overflowing with errors and idiocy. I especially liked how one of Chie's insults at the end was, literally, "A fetish used for used stocking and old women!" I'd accuse them of just copy-pasting a dictionary for that, but then again I don't think a dictionary would misspell "stockings".
(I got one thing wrong earlier, it's Itoshiki himself who says "gum-sha", which a.f.k. renders as "gumpoo" because that's a more natural way to abbreviate in English than the two-first-syllables Japanese way.)
>>58 Not very clever (>.O)/ Ouch coming from a guy who insults people for asking a single damn question instead of answering it. I'd say u arent the very clever one. I never thought someone who was into anime would be a "bad" person but, I suppose I was mistaken. I know for a fact that some fansubbers have their own personal "websites" because I have been to a few myself. You my sir have to get off your fukin high horse and join the rest of society, because right now all I see from u is a guy with no life who enjoys talking bad about other people on the web because you are unable to get up from your chair and go outside and have a real debate. No offense to anyone else I offended with my words.(because I am pretty sure I offended a few :P)
Christ, what is with the teenagers in here?
In Dokkyun's defense, Guerrand does have his own website. If you can call it that. I know KAA has their own as well.
How come in the episode where they visit Itoshiki's family the Bure fandubbed called Itoshiki's sister peerless sensei wouldnt what Fura said mean horny not peerless?
I got Guerrand's for that one. Guerrand's are pretty good.
But even so, AFK is not perfect either, he often makes very awkward localization choices.
The best thing to do is always double-check the translations whenever something sounds strange or un-funny.
That way you learn something, and are one-step closer to not needing subtitles.
You're another person confusing localization and translation. "Localization" is changing the content, not merely using English words for Japanese ones. Changing "Yoshinoya" to "MacDonald's" is localization. Changing "moe" to "turn-on" is translation.
And while a.f.k. may actually not be perfect, it's in a completely different league from most other fansubbers when it comes to both comprehension of the Japanese, and the English writing.
One more example: Bure-Tsuki completely dropped the word "sue" from Kaede's line when she was sunbathing. I mean, it's her catchphrase, and they still didn't get it?
Changing "moe" to "turn-on" is changing the meaning though, so I would call it localisation. Same with changing "lolicon" to "pedophile", or "tsundere" to "bipolar".
> Same with changing "lolicon" to "pedophile"
No it isn't.
It's impossible to translate without changing the meaning (usually in some subtle way that people not fluent in both languages will not grasp.)
Personally, I think all the examples >>68 provided are fine. "Tsundere" and "bipolar" are close enough (although 'tsundere' is more specific) and the other two are ascribed different meanings mainly by perverts trying to hide their shame.
>>70 has it. Furthermore, if you actually know and care about those terms, you already know them, and don't need them translated.
No, "tsundere" and "bipolar" are completely different and that translation would be simply inaccurate. I don't know how you can get around that. Especially within the context of the conversation.
It'd be like converting "WASP" to "wealthy", only less accurate.
Besides, we shouldn't be nitpicking over the inevitable flaws of our beloved fansubbers, we should be praising them for their hard work.
Maybe #9 is slow in coming because they're tired of hearing our bitching for their thankless labor. We should praise, make sacrifice, and sing their glories aloud in the autumn air!
If they have any sense, 9 is "slow" because they know a.f.k. is back, and there's no point for anyone else to keep butchering the show, and a.f.k.'s should be out soon enough.
And seriously, if you watched any of the other version, I do recommend going back and re-watching a.f.k.'s version, so you actually have a chance to get the jokes this time around.
like "self-made publications"? Seriously, AFK killed that joke in episode 7.
If Guerrand comes back I'll take him over AFK any day, although I will acknowledge that Bure-tsuki has room for improvement.
That's an extremely literal translation of what "doujinshi" means. No joke was killed, it was translated pretty much perfectly.
Controversy.
Afk's choice is awkward given the conversation.
Contrary to popular belief, the purpose of a translator is not to be a Japanese --> English Dictionary.
No, the translation has to be the same for Itoshi and Fujyoshi's lines. It was correct.
*itoshiki
What, "Doujinshi"?
It doesn't make much sense for Itoshiki to be referring to "fan-made publications" when he's talking about amateur poetry of the early 20th Century.
Seriously I don't even know what you are complaining about. The translation was entirely correct. It was a little bit awkward, but there isn't any way to translate that joke without a bit of awkwardness.
Truth.
And now back on topic. Who has AFK's email so we can send him encouragements/threats for him to sub faster?
Because "doujinshi" doesn't mean self-published material to an English speaker, and the whole joke rests on the fact that Itoshiki doesn't know what otaku doujinshi are like, and he thinks it refers to things like self-published books of poetry, like he apparently used to make. Even those who do know the word "doujinshi" wouldn't get the joke at all.
AFK COME BACK TO US!!!
OR BURE-TSUKI!!!
ANYONE!!
So afk came out with 09 apparently.
Seems the guy hasn't given up on us after all!
Take this as a lesson stop living on Internet Time and have some fucking patience.
>>82 Tokyo Mew MEW!!! I finished it long ago >_;
Then I WAS traumatised by doujinshi.
I'm living on normal time, and one month is still pretty fucking long for zero episodes.
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei was great, both visually and humor wise.
The minimal cultural standard of crime is colouring a 100-yen coin black with a pencil!
ANIME -> FIGURES -> LARGE FIGURES -> LOVE DOLLS -> THE FEMALE BODY
Hello,
anyone can explain to me the sentence "Die Nico tards!" from the episode 8 please. I don't understand the word "tards", and I don't know who is this "Nico".
Thank you

tard is short for retard.
Nico Nico Douga is a japanese site similar to youtube.
Specifically, a site devoted mostly to spamming really stupid comments that scroll on top of the videos. It's yet another brand of intentional stupidity, basically.
NEET ga ippai! Nico Nico Douga!
Thanks for the answer ;)

The comment is possible for not scroll on the videos.
Press the "comment" button on the part of under the screen.
Nico Nico Douga is hard to use it unless Japanese is readable.

NIco Nico is superior to Youtube in most aspects.
Two open questions.
1) What was the point of that "Preface" episode which had only an episode or two of content crammed into one episode? I know it was a kind of special, but is it going to be followed by another set to cover the rest, or is it stand-alone?
2) How are people liking Zoku? I dunno if I'm overly fond of it compared to the first series.
>1) What was the point of that "Preface" episode which had only an episode or two of content crammed into one episode? I know it was a kind of special, but is it going to be followed by another set to cover the rest, or is it stand-alone?
It was more true to the original manga.
>>107
Aside from the rushing and cutting things down to fit more into one episode, it was great.
I wish they would do that for the whole series. :-(
Forget bitching about Zetsubou not following the manga though. Excel Saga is the one we really need the remake for.
Never mind that even Rikudo himself thought the anime was totally hilarious, no, it's obviously not good enough for Mr. Internet Complaints.
At the time it was made, there wasn't as much manga to work from. Now we have a huge number of volumes with new plot, it wouldn't hurt to have a remake which covers these. I mean the anime doesn't even include the best of the three girls, how can it possibly be acceptable anymore?
I've read enough of the manga to know that while it is fun, it is nowhere near as entertaining as the anime.
I've read the whole manga and I find it worthy, and I will continue to buy new volumes as they appear. A remake would be better done after the story has finished anyway.
Love it. Still don't have the final episode because I can't find it for direct download yet...
I've been enjoying Zoku so far, but I've only seen the first episode.
The first part of Zoku 2 made my brain bleed.
And what were the subtitles at the top of the screen? The subs at the bottom were definitely translating the Japanese subtitles for the gibberish. Where did the top ones come from?
Lacking any specific information, I'd guess the manga.
>>115
Yes the manga chapter went "Commodore Perry goes around opening stuff (like harbors) until he finds out some things are better left closed", but for the animation they changed it into an alien story.
Ep.3 is pretty funny too, I'm happy they did the "making a big deal out of small things" bit. Also they introduced Okusa (the married one) but we don't really get to see her...
>>118
i think Dragon Ball Z is a pretty cool guy

>>118
DBZ is all about aliens you fool. I mean first they decide that Goku is an alien, and then 90% of all other characters are alien by the time it ends. What a crock!
>>120
well, yeah. But I just mean it wasn't any old "Alien story."
Okay so it wasn't any old Alien story, it was any old Alien story where half of it occurs on Namek.
I absolutely loved episode 4. Jun was awesome.
It felt like Chiri was drawn strangely in the first part of episode 4, did anyone else notice that or was it just my imagination?
