To effectively combine flames, trolls, pitiful arguments and other crap about how you or someone else dislikes a certain fansub group, this thread serves as a general gathering place for all of the hatred that is out there for those who provide their services for free to us.
So, if you have something bad or nasty to say, say it here!
Let them have it!
LOL ANIMEJUNKIES MASS NAKED CHILD EVENTS
No, seriously though, they deserve an honourable mention for becoming the archetypal bad fansubbing group - and even better, since they're safely dead and gone, there's no annoying reality to get in the way of their legendary reputation.
This post was TIMED BY KILLSHOK.
That post couldn't have been timed by Killshok. It would only take up about a third of the screen.
http://www.animeforge.net/changes.txt
Changes we made to The Naruto Movie.
1. we added 5 new notes explaining -chan, -sama, -san, -kun, -sensei.
2. we rewrote some of the notes making them easier to understand.
3. we changed all sister to nee-chan and added a note for nee-chan.
4. we fixed the overlap with the subtitle and the karaoke in the end.
5. we added more time to every note.
This would be hilarious if it was satire, but I went over and asked them, and they said they were serious.
I was dissapointed with SHRIMPS' handling of the last few episodes of School Rumble. Questionable translations, no subs of the OP/ED text, grainy video. But beggars can't be choosers, I guess.
> no subs of the OP/ED text
Some people hate the overdone karaoke effects that a lot of groups use. English, japanese, romanized japanese, any fansub credits, and all the original credits can make quite a mess.
Sorry, I didn't mean karaoke. School Rumble has short snippets of scenes from the episode during the "grand sponsor" bit after the OP/ED. This is accompanied by black text explaining points about characters or stuff that's happened off-screen. That's the text I meant.
As a side note, I generally don't like the overdone karaoke, especially when they further clutter the screen with kana karaoke.
And don't get me started on the practice of most fansub groups to add their own credits(rather prominently too) while leaving the real ones untranslated.
It's not that hard to translate them you know. What do the people who add credits on ANN do?
Triad translated the entire credits scroll at the end of Beyond the Clouds. That's really above and beyond the call of duty, but it shows what you can do with some dedication.
HAWKS.
I saw their gits movie translation. I bet there's a person somewhere who can say something positive about it.
The best part of that translation was how they thought "Section 9" was a person's name.
Also, I'm vaguely suprised that nobody has complained about how I left Onee-sama untranslated but changed -san to Miss in Gunbuster, but since I've gotten barely any comments about any of it I guess I shouldn't be too suprised.
PS - "we don't use PNG because uncompressed TIFF is higher quality"
(w
I didn't watch it, but I pretty much agree with that one, because I think you should try to translate honorifics, except for "onee-sama" which is special.
or "onii-sama" (私の僕)
DigitalPanic's Gunbuster subs feature a barely readable font. Who was dumb enough to think serif fonts in a hardsub was a good idea? More ADTRW subs would be awesome.
I think you have to give some credit to LMF.
Their GITS 2nd Gig translates "Individualist 11" as "Particularist 11"... even in the cases when "Individualist" is spoken in English!
>>20
I hope for you that that was intentional...
LMF drives me BATSHIT CRAZY with the damn scrolling subtitles. That's so utterly idiotic, it boggles the mind.
Hmm... I'm torn on that feature. On one hand, the scrolling is off-putting.
On the other hand, it beats the alternative, which is where the subtitles don't stay up long enough to read.
GITS seems to be the kind of series where one word in Japanese translates to two words in English, and it floods pretty quickly. Or maybe that's also a lack of skill on LMF's part, I don't know. :-)
It doesn't beat that at all! The minute those subtitles start scrolling, I completely lose focus in the text, and have to spend several seconds to find the the place I was reading at again. If I don't pause the second one of the subtitles scrolls, I'll miss it completely.
How is that any worse than having to pause to read the text already?
Talking about Laughing Man Fansubs, is this website the only place to get the episodes http://gits.no-jutsu.com/gits/ ?
I've never found any other resource for GITS 2ndGIG other than Share/WinNY.
That's the URL I have and probably the only place to get it.
i think it's bad to critise subber , they use afterall alot of time on their work , and face it no subber no anime(in case you dont know japanese). And ask youself could you do any better.
>>28
I think it's bad to be generally approving of anything that just involved any ammount of work, that's just being careless about your own opinions.
And it's a fallacy to assert you cannot criticise something if you aren't able to "do it better". What, if I am not a professional chef I am not allowed to say that the food I got served tastes awful?
>>29
Indeed, and you'll find that most movie critics were never directors.
But then again, I am actually of the opinion that I could edit better than most fansub groups around. It's just a matter of skill versus desire.
Any fansubber can make dire mistakes though.
Case in point: AnimeONE, who I used to respect, were seen to use "coercionness" in a sub, which isn't even a word. I don't know what was going on with the editors that day, but they clearly weren't doing any editing. :-)
If they put it up as two separate subtitles, the text would have flashed by too fast to read unless you hit the pause button.
No matter how you look at it, the two ways have the exact same drawback: requiring pausing from the watcher to see the text.
I could suggest a third method... the first line of text appears above, the second line of text appears below, then the first line fades out after. That way, it doesn't move, and the text stays up long enough to read.
No, re-read what I said: I would probably have managed to read two separate subtitles. I could not, however, read the scrolling one, because I lost several seconds of reading time to finding my place in the text again.
scrolling text was genius , and GITS need's it.
I've never ever seen scrolling subtitles, fansubs or professional ones, and I am glad I didn't.
While we're on the subject of professionals, it's a good thing that a few groups have started using soft subs. Hard subs get in the way of good screenshots... the one major benefit to DVDs was that the subtitles are soft so that you can turn them off.
Just because one person in the world can read it without pausing, doesn't mean everyone can. Case in point: I'm exactly the opposite. If they'd flashed them up separately, they wouldn't have been readable to me, and therefore that option is just as bad!
>>37
Oh hey, but how to take screenshots of softsubs?
If you know, please help me out here:
http://4-ch.net/tech/kareha.pl/1125953617/2-
I don't think very many people call that a "major benefit".
Those people probably don't even take screenshots.
But actually, the way I do it is entirely through XBMC, so I probably can't help.
sigh
It really is a shame when a group that is usually capable of good work gets rushed into producing a second-hand sub.
Case in point: LIME's sub of Mai-Otome ep. 1.
Dropped lines, untranslated lines, lines left marked with $-signs, lines translated very poorly indeed. Sloppy, sloppy work. This should all have been caught in QC and sent back for a second pass.
What else has LIME done? I thought they just did bad DVD rips of terrible shows like Grenadier and Maburaho.
Yep, I've heard that their previous stuff sucked as well.
>>42
I agree.
Doremi-OTOME who rushed Mai-Otome ep01 out the door did a better job than LIME and released a day eariler. The LIME translation wasn't as good and was klunky in parts. There was a point near the begining where the character-formerly-known-as-Tate is looking the dandylion-fuzzball creatures LIME completly misses the line where he says the fuzzballs are good luck. In LIME's defence they translated the op, Doremi-OTOME didn't
i just got heart of madness's sub of the hokuto no ken movie. was it really necessary to have a GIANT FANSUBBER LOGO appear every fucking ten minutes (AND EACH TIME IN A NEW COLOR AND LOCATION ONSCREEN)?
> heart of madness
Fun fact: Stupid fansub groups always have stupid names.
>>37
Soft subs also allow those of us with a with a little bit of technical knowledge to add English subtitles to DVD ISO files for DVDs that probably won't ever make it to the US, which I'd like to show to my friends.
One man released the full series of Kimi ga Nozomu Eien on DVD with English subtitles added in, and that has inspired me to follow in his footsteps and learn how to edit DVDs. The only obstacle is getting those stingy fansub groups to release scripts for hard-subbed episodes. I've had to resort to manually transcribing, re-timing, and typesetting the subs myself.
A logo every 10 min. means they ripped the source from an HK DVD and are trying to cover up the watermark.
There are some groups that release scripts (mine does but our host's down), but I agree, it's a shame that more don't. Then again, I may be biased, esp. since R2 buyers like to donate DVDs to people who release.
As far as lousy work, TV-Nihon has some pretty horrid translations (they recruit translators starting in 2nd yr Japanese, I've got friends in 3rd and 4th getting A's admitting that they need more classes before they start), ugly karaoke, and piss poor grammar.
>>49
ohhhh!
it all falls together. thank you cap'n. you made it happen.
Seeing as how sellers of illicit subs do use fansub script files, I think it's a bit strange to complain about groups not releasing scripts and mention crappy HK DVDs in the same post..
>>51
But they also happily make bootlegs from hardsubs, so it doesn't matter.
>>51
It really goes both ways. US groups use the video and subs off HKs, HKs use US scripts, and so the circle of life continues.
Er, only a tiny minority of fansubbers who are too incomptent to do any real translation do that.
I can't be the only person insulted by this more than by anything Nanashi did. Yeah, "fan"subs.
>>55
lawl. at least the guys who stole and released the scripts were honest about it.
Wow, that's some serious faggotry! They even believe a click-through "you can't enter this site" disclaimer means anything.
Someone give me the name of an OSX-compatible program that'll let me go in and edit the subtitle track of this LIME-fansubbed DearS. There're spaces all over the place, it l ooks li ke thi s, and it's SOOOOOOOOOO annoying. Who fucking PROOFREADS this stuff? Anyone have LIME's website so I can tell them to fix it up? DX
You can extract and merge back the subtitles in mkvtoolnix, but you have to use Terminal. You can edit them in a text editor.
But why are you watching DearS in the first place?! It stands for DEAR SLAVES!
I check Shinsen Subs' tracker everyday waiting for the last episodes of frickin Black Lagoon and frickin Noein! COME ON, I'M DYING. RELEASE THE END OF THOSE SERIES ALREADY PLZZZZZZ!
Tv Nihon does indeed suck, screw waiting for new Boukenger episodes from them. I now have to download Raws to continue watching the show.
can anyone point me to a series subbed by this and that? I want to see for myself if they suck.
FLAG 02-03 raw
Ok, they toned down the contrast into a tolerable range.
But that "camera vision" is still there, and it gets real annoying real fast.
The mecha has been seen in action, but it's not very exciting. First, because it's viewed from a distance. Then, the scene is green and blurry from the night vision. And it seems that the meacha's weaponry is a mere machinegun. It reminds me of that scene where a helicopter in Iraq was machinegunning a guy trying to go into a car, except that it wasn't green on TV.
Also, a mecha with feet deployed in the desert's sand? Bad move.
Anyway, still boring.
>>65 Aw shucks, wrong thread. Ignore.
lol
lol
What are you, the Lol Brothers?
( ゚ ヮ゚)
Hahahahah, Doujin-World are throwing another hissy fit because people dare to take the doujins they illegally distribute, and distribute them!
http://datorrents.com/torrents-details.asp?id=13651&page=0
Gee, I wonder if that has anything to do with how they're getting paid by HentaiKey?
lol @ scrolling subtitles
What an absolutely retarded idea.
About as retarded as subtitles that only reveal part of the text, so you have to keep watching them (and not the rest of the screen) to see when the next bits will appear.
>>73 haha FnT with "The Third", right?
Yeah I saw that -- so annoying!
I had to train my eyes to NOT look at the sub before the text completely appears.
I was thinking Lunar with nearly everything, but whatever works for you.
I kind of think you should stop watching The Third in the first place.
Lunar's perfect-timing obsession is kind of annoying, though.
Lunar has a lot of weird policies
ONEE-SAMA KICK
(I registered a forum account so I could post the official Gainax names for the planets in Diebuster, in case they stopped using retarded names like "Octobrion", but I don't think they ever approved the account. registration forums lol)
HELLO I LIKE 4CH
The thing of subbing is that even if they made mistake on their sub, no one would notice anyway because we don't know Japanese or else we wont read sub.
In a surprise turn of events, it appears that a member of Nanashi is a jerk. Who'd have thought.
http://www.fansubbers.org/index.php/Wiki/Silverfire
The passive third-person doesn't really help to cover up that he added it himself.
(It took maybe ten minutes to fix Perian up to hide the garbage text in gg stuff, so maybe the VLC developers are also jerks. But still.)
shinsen-subs for asshat encodings.
The people who subbed Kamen Rider Black have screwy timing.
>>62 Those assfucks at Tv-nihon are fucking faggots and evil sensitive bastards that pick on the noobs that hang out in their chat channel.
Shinsen-subs for making made up lines. I remember one D Gray man episode where Lavi's line was subbed to "Don't be such an emo fag Mimi". WTH??!!!!
^ yeah that was soo idiotic!
Shinsen-subs has practically always sucked.
Though, they're okay every now and then.
Shinsen seem to vary widely, probably because they have a lot of translators working for them, and don't seem to care if those translators are horrible or not.
Nyoro~n fansubs make up half the stuff in their "translations".
Slowpoke shall now exit... slowly.
yesy for being so goddamn slow with StrikerS
Conclave for never finishing a damn series.
Your Mom/Dad/Whatever for being posers.
Shitsen, I mean Shinsen for having crappy ass encodings.
And pretty much every other fansub group other than Eclipse and A.F.K since they're both awesome.
Well, AFK's been taking some major heat since they dumped Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei for Clannad, and understandably. Seriously people, who's gonna sub SZS now?
There are like five groups subbing Clannad now too.
Zetsubou Shita.
I hate subs with any sort of karaoke at all. Especially the morons who distribute MKVs but then shit all over the benefits of the format by hardsubbing karaoke effects.
Even worse are karaoke effects for songs that happen in the episode itself. The mere decision of subbing them at all can rape scenes almost as horribly as TL notes do.
I'm pretty sure ASS format can do animation too... which makes it even more inconceivable that a group would hardsub karaoke just to make the letters bounce.
"Dumped"?
Well, he started subbing Clannad, and do you see [a.f.k]Zetsubou 09 anywhere on the tubes?
I suppose he might be trying to do both, but that will take a while.
There's no information about it being dumped though. Remember, there were some huge waits between certain episodes of Lucky Star, and then a whole flood come in a single week. It could just be the same deal all over again.
(Anyway in the case of Clannad, there are plenty of groups doing HD versions, so I feel no need to willingly decrease my viewing pleasure by going with AFK's one.)
Clannad is not animated in HD.
>>98
Well maybe not standard HD, but 1024x576, which is somewhere between 720p and 1080p.
Clannad is not animated at 1024x576.
It is broadcast at 480 upscaled to 720. The composite-cable dot crawl in the credit overlays makes this quite obvious.
>>102
Okay. I have to wonder then, why fansubbers would then scale up yet again to 1024.
Also, there's only 3 episodes left of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei so I'm sure AFK will finish those and work on Clannad full-time.
Okay after looking at the 1024x576 version for a while, there is no way that's 480, the thinnest line visible is much thinner and sharper than 480 would have allowed for. And if the widescreen version were really 480, can you imagine how low res the 4:3 version would be horizontally?
There are sharpen filters and much better scaling algorithms available than you'd think.
> And if the widescreen version were really 480, can you imagine how low res the 4:3 version would be horizontally?
75%?
On top of that, aren't anime "animated" as vector graphics and converted to the destination resolution at render-time? Kyoto Animation were claiming that everything was "re-rendered" for the Haruhi DVDs, which made me think that.
Anime Junkies
>>107
Yes, pretty much. They could release a HD version, but they don't to boost the DVD/BD sales. It's sad.
Shinsen Subs
That's why DVD are sold - television broadcasts aren't meant to be kept and archived.
LIME Subs
I'd have to say Lunar. Because it's important to actually finish a series rather than just going on to another one, a concept that they do not seem to grasp.
Your-Mom Fansubs
>>112 DVD is such low quality compared to the subs though. When will the distributors finally notice HD?
Dattebayo Fansubs
If you're referring to Team Dattebayo, creators of the Death Note Abriged Series: NO U
Dattebayo like those who did speedsubs with Naruto and Bleach crap
Dattebayo is made up of cocky people that think too highly of themselves. It's true that they're fact but the group itself is made of fail.
Doremi Fansubs
